Dear Reader,
Ends and new beginnings this month. First, we bring you the 7th and final volume of the gorgeous Complete Collection of Valerian, packed full of ground-breaking sci-fi as usual. Are your shelves groaning under the weight yet?
But science-fiction fans need not worry, for we also debut a new series written by Leo, creator of The Worlds of Aldebaran, and illustrated by Icar: Distant Worlds, a self-contained story in five volumes, distinct from Aldebaran – although readers will recognise Leo's gift for creating strange extra-terrestrial creatures and ecosystems. A lost father, An adventurous young man and a planet-wide mystery – what more does anyone need?
Then it's the return of Largo Winch, but with a new writer at the helm: Eric Giacometti, veteran novelist and reporter, takes over from Jean Van Hamme, and does it in style, bringing Largo up to date on 21st century financial practices – with the usual trail of bodies and high-speed chases, of course!
Finally, our newest Lucky Luke brings the Lonesome Cowboy all the way across the Atlantic to … Paris, the City of Light! A far cry from his usual open skies of the West, but who better to protect Lady Liberty, after all?
October with Cinebook: we're only just starting!
Not only is this the seventy first Lucky Luke we publish, but this is also the latest one! A Cowboy in Paris by Jul and Achdé will be coming out on 2 November in French and in English – how's that for quick delivery, hmm?!

In the arenas, the Campton kids have won their ‘citizenship’ of the In-Between-World’s strange society. Now free to come and go as they please, they’ve left town for the mountains, following Dodzi without really knowing why.

When the young boy explains to them that he is in fact trying to discover whether he is the herald of Evil – the Midnight Child – a violent dispute ensues. Meanwhile, hidden nearby, the soldiers of the First Families await an opportunity to attack...

I reviewed no. 8 –The Arena back in April and to be honest I opened this new album up and sat back to enjoy.  I then had difficulty remembering what had gone on before as this is seven months later and I read a lot.  In fact, I think that I may be missing an album as certain references drew a blank from me.  Cinebook does seem to be getting long delays in books appearing –this album is designated August 2018 and I have waited but it is still on the site as This product is currently not available.

A pity because I do love this series and the characters in it  interact well. I initially stated that I wondered whether this would work.  Violence, scary scenes, killings and all the other things do work and not an adult in sight.  I will warn you to prepare for a shock at the end of this one.

I would hate to see Alone as a movie or TV series because it works so well in comic book format.  A winner!

Cinebook The 9th Art: GOMER GOOF 3 - GONE WITH THE GOOF

Authors: Franquin
Age: 8 years and up
Size: 21.7 x 28.7 cm
Number of pages: 48 colour pages
Publication: July 2018
ISBN: 9781849184090
£6.99 inc. VAT

Among all the things that make Gomer such a lovable rascal, there are two that are instantly recognisable: his car, and his goofophone. His old lemon, favourite target of the constabulary and every pedestrian’s nightmare, is responsible for half the pollution in town – as well as many of the more ... exotic accidents.

The rest of the latter are mostly the result of the terrible ‘musical’ instrument put together by Gomer – stiff competition for the Trumpets of Jericho!

Unfortunately, in my current state humour of any kind is lost on me. I showed this to a couple of people who thought it was quite “fun” and “funny” –so you need not depend on the opinion so you need not depend on a bearded, bipolar miserable old git!  The artwork and colours are great as always and I did enjoy the previous Gomer Goof books!

In this day and age we need more laughs and if Lucky Luke ain’t your style try Gomer Goof!

TRENT 3 - WHEN THE LAMPS ARE LIT

Authors: Leo & Rodolphe
Age: 12 years and up
PAPERBACK
Size: 21.7 x 28.7 cm
Number of pages: 48 colour pages
Publication: July 2018
£6.99 inc. VAT
ISBN: 9781849183864

The life of a Mountie is a lonely one, always on the road while normal people go home to their loved ones. Time has passed since Trent met Agnes, and the sergeant finally decides to propose to her.

But he’s too late – his beloved is gone, already married to another. The news sends Trent into a downward spiral of self-destruction, and it’s a drunken wretch who, a few weeks later, finds himself in a small town harried by brutal bandits...

I have enjoyed these Trent books and each one has been tinged with a certain atmosphere that carries you along with the story.  This one had me asking a lot of questions –and I am not going to give away the twist ending.

I cannot fault the art and colour work.  Spot on.  The story –excellent!  It really made me wonder what the hell was happening with Trent.

This one gets 15 out of 10 (my blog I can give whatever rating I want :-P )

LUCKY LUKE 70 - THE O.K. CORRAL

Authors: Xavier Fauche and Eric Adam; illustrated by Morris
Age: 8 years and up
Paperback
Size: 21.7 x 28.7 cm
Number of pages: 48 colour pages
Publication: August 2018
£6.99 inc. VAT
ISBN: 9781849184175

Everyone’s heard of the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral: the most famous shootout of the Old West, between the Earp brothers and Doc Holliday on the side of law and order, and the Clanton brothers and their gang. A legend told many times in books and films, in sometimes contradictory versions…

Fortunately, here is the definitive version at last, restoring the unvarnished truth of what is another triumph of … Lucky Luke!

Wow.  70 comic albums which I think is Cinebook’s longest running series.  That is an incredible achievement and as I have said before, it opens up the world of Lucky Luke to a whole new generation –plus readers who have only seen five previous English language editions appear (in the 1980s).

What can you say about this series, the writing and the art that has not been said 70 times already?!  Remembering that I never liked Lucky Luke to start with it is surprising how fond I’ve grown of the character.  Not your serious Western and definitely not Blazing Saddles style Western –a bit more like Support Your Local Gunfighter/Sheriff.

Considering the UK has nothing to really encourage the comic book interest of youngsters all I can say is thank heavens for Cinebook, Lucky Luke and their other series!!

BEAR'S TOOTH 2 – HANNA

Authors: Yann & Alain Henriet
Age: 12 years and up
Size: 21.7 x 28.7 cm
Number of pages: 48 colour pages
Publication: September 2018
£6.99 inc. VAT
ISBN: 9781849183352

While above him a British night raid is torn to shreds by some of the Luftwaffe’s ‘wunderwaffen’, Max is airdropped into Poland and taken in by local resistance. His mission: infiltrate the nearby German base posing as a replacement pilot, locate Hanna Reitsch ... and kill her! Hanna, his childhood friend, who wears the same bear tooth pendant he does. Hanna, who’s a legendary figure of the Third Reich and an exceptional test pilot...

The plot thickens as Max is infiltrates and finds what might be loosely called a "love interest".  The German body count grows and quite by accident Hanna discovers who the "new guy" is.

If you like your Second World War stories to be full of action, properly drawn uniforms and lots of military hardware then you should not pass this one!  And there is, of course, the question (after learning more about their childhood) of whether Max will kill Hanna?

DISTANT WORLDS 1 - EPISODE 1

Authors: LEO
Art and colours by Icar
Age: 15 years and up
Size: 18.4 x 25.7 cm
Number of pages: 48 colour pages
Publication: October 2018
ISBN: 9781849183758

18 year old Paul, his mother and his sister land on Altair-4, a recently established human colony. They expect to be reunited with Paul’s father there and start a new life, but he doesn’t show up to welcome them at the spaceport… Later, they are rescued from a gang of thugs by a Stepanerk, a member of a sentient alien species. An encounter that will prove invaluable to Paul when he decides to go and look for his father…
Anything Leo works on tends to get my attention and the new artist (to me) Icar has a style that at times reminds me of Bill (Sub-Mariner) Everett. The story starts promisingly enough and look at that cover.  Now that is a way to grab attention.
I ought to also point out that a goldfish from hell appears and  at least one childhood fantasy game memory was ignited.  So we have a good story and crackingly good art -all in full colour, 48 pages for £6.99???
Check out the Cinebook The 9th Art site for previous Leo series!

Reviews and Criticism

You'll note no one criticizes me on CBO in comments. Apparently there was a brief discussion why I was not working on CBO as I have done in the past -10 or more hours a day and posting content several times a day and not missing a day.

Because the people who read CBO are here free-loading and do not support CBO in any way, shape or form.  For over 22 years thousands daily come here, readf and go away or copy and paste to their own sites without giving credit.

Buy my books so the money helps me keep myself and CBO going?  Like hell.

I post when I post between doing other things that are more interesting even if they do not pay.  My life is not yours so don't complain.  And stop sending sob comments about my publishing interesting books you would buy...if you had any money.  No one has fallen for that bull-shit "send me freebies" crap for decades.  Unless they are dumb.

Book Reviews This Week......

....Maybe.

I added maybe as it depends when I get around to reviews.  I seriously, after 22 years of CBO, have given up.

No support.  No feedback.

No book sales.

You don't care so long as you get your free read, right.

So reviews when reviews happen.

Things Is How Things Is

I am almost Shakespearean at times.

Well, after 21 years of CBO all of you who pop by here on a daily basis -CBO has now sailed way past 4.5 million views since 2012 when it moved to Blogger from WordPressw- and over the last few months I have asked for just the most meagre of signs of support -comments or whatever. Nothing. I was proven right when I told the person who said "Give PayPal donations one last go" that I expected there to be no response.

You want stuff for free.  You don't care enough to type "Enjoyed the post" -even spam porn messages send me more than that.  You don't want more Mega Posts.  You don't want CBO video posts. You just want stuff for free and for it to not involve too much straining by moving and clicking the mouse.

You are the reason bloggers are quitting and why small publishers are also quitting. Three artists (quality artists at that) have told me in the last week they are quitting comics. You will not buy books or support anyone in any way and it is you who is killing off comics.

Now, move along petal.  I am sure there are other places you can leech from.
