Jean Giraud (Moebius) 1938-2012

One of the greats of Comics Jean Giraud (Moebius) has died. My thanks to Sebchoq for the heads up. I had wanted to write something but I think that there will (or should be) endless tributes to him everywhere on the internet over the next few days.

All that needs to be said is that a genius has passed.  But the works of that genius shall live on forever.
My condolences to his wide and family.

The following is taken from The Metro online.

The pioneering writer and artist was best known for his hugely successful Western comic strip Blueberry, among many works in the sci-fi arena of illustrated stories.

He also worked as a production designer on a series of blockbuster feature films, including Alien, Tron, the Masters of the Universe, Willow, The Abyss, and The Fifth Element.

Born in the Nogent-sur-Marne suburb of Paris, Moebius started drawing for comics in his teens but grew to become one of the most highly regarded artists in France in the 1960s and 1970s.

His Lieutenant Blueberry character, initially created for the Fort Navajo strip in Pilote, spawned a spin-off that grew into one of France’s most successful exported comic strips.

Later in his career, Moebius collaborated with Alejandro Jodorowsky on the L’Incal series, which also won widespread acclaim.

He co-created the Métal Hurlant magazine, which led to two of his other most famous serials – The Airtight Garage and the groundbreaking Arzach.

In 1988 Moebius was chosen among 11 other winners of the prestigious Grand Prix of the Angoulême Festival, which gave him the opportunity to illustrate a postage stamp set issued on the theme of communication.

And in the same year he was drafted in as an artist on one of Marvel’s most famous creations, the Silver Surfer, when he drew for the two-issue Parable mini-series – scripted by Stan Lee.

Other works of Moebius’ included the multi-volume comic strip XIII, which went on to be developed into a successful and visually engaging video game.

He died at his home in Paris after what close friends described as a long illness.
