Farewell, ‘Futurama’: 5 Minor Characters We’ll Miss the Most (and Where to Catch Them Next)
By Tucker Cummings | Yahoo! Contributor Network
It's been a long, strange road for "Futurama," but this resilient little series will finally come to an end this fall. After running for four seasons on Fox, getting canceled, spawning four direct-to-DVD movies, and then getting picked up for two seasons on Comedy Central, the "Futurama" series finale "Meanwhile" will air on Sept. 4.
Fans of the series will miss core characters like Leela, Fry, and Bender … but some of the characters they'll miss the most are the bit players. From robots to janitors, here are five minor characters "Futurama" fans will miss the most (and where you can catch the voice actors who play them next).
The Robot Devil
Played by veteran voice-over actor Dan Castellaneta, the Robot Devil was beloved for his musical interludes, hatred of Bender, and wicked sense of humor. He was used sparingly, and so every Robot Devil episode was a solid one. Best known to TV fans as the voice of Homer on "The Simpsons," it's a safe bet that Castellaneta will be voicing beloved cartoon characters for years to come.
Scruffy
Scruffy the Janitor started off as a running joke, but David Herman's character was gradually incorporated into more episodes as the series went on. By the time Season 7 rolled around, Scruffy was practically a core member of the Planet Express team. You can catch more of Herman's voiceover work on Fox, where he voices guidance counselor Mr. Frond and the deep-voiced, unitard-wearing hooker Marshmallow on "Bob's Burgers."
The Unnamed, Unattractive Giant Monster
He uses the biggest container of deodorant you've ever seen, and he's only been in one episode. He's the Unattractive Giant Monster, and he was voiced by Patton Oswalt in the episode "Benderama." Will the monster ever find true love? We'll never know!
Oswalt will be providing voices for "Axe Cop" and will hopefully reprise his role as Bob Sweeney on "Justified."
URL
This robotic peace officer has been in the series since the pilot, and is usually partnered with a human named Smitty. URL is voiced by John DiMaggio, who also voices Bender and Elzar. Cartoon fans won't have to look far to find DiMaggio in another animated role. He currently voices Jake on "Adventure Time."
George Takei
George Takei has appeared as himself in four episodes of "Futurama." Famous for taking potshots atWilliam Shatner and running a kabuki theater in the world of "Futurama," Takei's unmistakable voice will be sorely missed. Fans can catch him next as S.T.E.V.E. in the upcoming film "Free Birds," which also stars Amy Poehler and Owen Wilson.
