"Like a thunderbolt from heaven, the epic first chapter of Jonathan Hickman's God is Dead is here! Mankind has argued over the existence of gods since the dawn of time. In modern eras it's been fashionable to mock religious believers with taunts of scientific testimony and fact. But when the gods of old begin to reappear on earth and claim the domain of man for their own, the world is thrown into a state of utter anarchy.

"Now Horus walks the streets of Egypt, Zeus has taken over the Sistine Chapel, and Odin is coordinating the dissection of the earth among the returned deities. Mankind held sway over the world for thousands of years and their hubris over that time has made them powerful, but when faced with the divine, can mortal weapons put an end to the second coming of the gods?

"After the missiles fly and the tanks roll, the gods still remain. As the world tumbles toward apocalypse, a group of scientists seek to do the impossible... give birth to the gods of science. As the greedy deities battle for absolute rule over the material world, a new divinity arises and the world will tremble beneath the war of the gods!"

God is Dead Volume 1 collects Hickman's entire first chapter of God is Dead issues #1-6.

Well, that's the publishing hype out of the way.  Now, this is an Avatar Press book so...lots of gore, killing and so on ad nauseum. My question is why does Titan Books keep pushing these Avatar books? One is basically the same as the other and there are some excellent Independent publishers out there that publish better books.

Now, I have heard someone criticised the artist heavily but I think that a bit unjust.  True there are some not so good bits in the book but there are 160 pages here and given the subject matter I think he didn't do bad a job but -oh dear lords- another comic using the likeness of Albert Einstein.  Come on -let's be a bit more original (is that possible?).  This is what you expect: it is an Avatar book. You buy Avatar you get Avatar.

But the story...what...a...mess...I think that every line of it was written so that another person or god could be gorily killed.  Quite honestly...big yawn.  I tried reading this twice but the first time was enough of a strain but I'm a glutton for punishment.

No. Some of the events and incidents, even for a comic, were a bit...awful.

Now, Return of the Gods: Twilight Of The Super Heroes did this so much better.
