Have I Ever Thought About Black Tower Books In China?

 
 A discussion through email had me thinking...but not for long!

I was asked why, if I am such a huge Chinese Manhua fan, I had not tried to interest any Chinese publishers in my books or projects?

Well, the problem is that it has been difficult to get responses from Chinese manhua publishers.  Firstly, you need to navigate their internet pages and I do not speak or read fluent Chinese! And if you use an automatic translator it can make certain words completely ridiculous when it comes to meaning.

Babel fish translated "contact the publisher" as "be kind and offer up a plate to your master"!  How it worked that I have no idea.

 Chinese publishers might also have concerns about anything of a political nature that might be in a book, which I can understand.

However, Black Tower has, since the 1980s, featuring Chinese characters from Singapore, Hong Kong and the Peoples Republic of China -The Phoenix Team being the designated Chinese national super team!

The team has, on occasion, questioned their military superiors or the task they are given.  However this is NOT declaring their government evil or wrong -just doing what normal people do: asking questions, having doubts but always striving to do the right thing.

 Black Tower does not seek to make political statements or declare one political system better or worse than another.  Comics/Manhua are about entertaining and being fun with a good story

When you look at comic publishing a lot of publishers -larger independents as well as bigger companies- have comics and graphic novels printed in China.  It makes sense -they have very good printing, economical and if a problem -technical or otherwise- crops up they go all out to solve it.  Sadly, a lot of UK printers have thrown guaranteed quality and service away -it is only the money that interests them.

Comics or Manhua are adaptable. Just like the Chinese themselves.

 I wrote a number of times since 1999 that there were two countries that, if they woke up to the potential, could move into the UK for a foothold and move out towards Europe, where there is a better appreciation of Chinese creators, and then branch out further.

Those countries were India (as detailed in a couple of long CBO postings) and China.

 India, for reasons I do not understand, possibly total lack of wanting to leave it's already existing market, despite having all the benefits pointed out to it just would not contemplate a print in India-publish in the UK comic or comic line.

 China could, since there is absolutely no competition in the UK, move in and set up a UK publishing house -put comics together in the UK, have them printed in China then shipped to the UK.

So, yes, I have thought about this before but, as I wrote, I have never had the opportunity to discuss such a thing with a genuine Chinese publisher.

Black Tower books published in China by a publisher there?  I should be so lucky, though Return Of The Gods and Cross Earths Caper might work!

 Yes, I have thought about it but it is one of those "if only" things.
