Monty Python Star Terry Gilliam Says He's Not Dead

I'm not dead either -just sayin'!

Terry Gilliam, a member of the zany Monty Python comedy troupe, has apologized to his fans "for being dead," after his passing was erroneously reported by Variety magazine.

Gilliam, also an Oscar-nominated director, said he was sorry for fans who had bought tickets to his upcoming event, "but, Variety has announced my demise. Don't believe their retraction and apology!"

Gilliam, 74, has public appearances scheduled in London and Glendale, California, and New York in October, according to his website, aimed at promoting his new book, "Gilliamesque: A Pre-Posthumous Memoir."

Variety, for its part, apologized via a tweet on Tuesday.

Here's a screengrab of the original tweet, via Toronto Sun editor Sean Fitzgerald.

Terry Gilliam dead? Did somebody press the publish button on the wrong post?

The death-notice misfire brings to mind one of the most famous catchphrases from the 1975 movie, "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" — "I'm not dead yet," from a scene that featured two of Gilliam's troupe buddies, Eric Idle and John Cleese.

  1. When CBO goes I am really going to miss these high-brow level discussions.

  4. Stransky: EVERYONE wants to use CBO to promote themselves or their books. 99.0% do not even say "thanks" or help CBO in any way. This is nearly a full time job -over 6 hours the other day. WHY would I keep promoting self-centred people to help them make money when they will not even mention my books in return on their blogs? Few people comment here. Keep it all in my head is more useful. The comics and books business has gotten no sales from the thousands who see the features. I'm wasting my time and energy. CBO goes I have hours of free time. Comics and books -why bother with new ones. I am SERIOUS with what I've written before:I can't make any sales money in 2015 -CBO and everything else goes.

    1. Terry, we DO take you very seriously and understand. Likewise, I am very aware of your frustration, and sometimes, ALOT of the time, because of the same reasons, to the point of insanity, have keenly felt for you and have longed to help. I, myself, have clung on through the past decades, not even knowing how to help myself because the right answers were out of reach and we both know it, that outwardly we maintain a veneer, sometimes of silliness and absurdity, but that masks a deep upsetting torment of frustration.

  5. Makes no difference. Three months left of 2015 and if orders do not start coming in then I'm out. CBO is gone. That simple. Can't justify wasting what is left of my time saying "maybe...maybe...maybe..." Stop. Cut. Clean.

    1. In the end, you must do what you feel is best for your own wellbeing. You know what I had to do, and believe me, it was painful. I wish you all the luck in the world, believe me, and hope that it all works out.

  6. Then let's hope the orders come.

  7. To be honest I cannot see orders starting. Think of all the people who have seen the CBO posts, the Google+ links and all the feeds and that has to come to 4-6 million which is an incredible figure. Over 7 or 8 years of the online store bugger all. Sales happening over the next three months -highly dubious! Always the optimist.
