Trent’s superior tasks him with helping a lady who came to the police to report the disappearance of her husband. The sergeant is stunned to discover the woman he is still in love with: Agnes. Her husband is the manager of a railway construction site far to the northwest, and he hasn’t been heard from in weeks. Worse, his last letters spoke of a mysterious danger threatening the camp. The pair go to investigate...

A giant killer creature?? Men disappearing?? I don't know why the Royal Canadian Mounted Police have been so popular in culture from Penny Dreadfuls to movies and TV shows but after more than a century there is still something about the lone Red Coat out in the wilderness by himself. Almost like Judge Dredd and "The Long Walk"! Bringing justice and law to the ungoverned wilderness.

Ohh, hark at me getting all literary

Anyway, the artwork in the Trent series has never been better and that might be Leo getting into the character and his world more. The colour work by Marie-Paule Alluard makes things even more atmospheric. As for the story...Rodolphe and Leo had me gripped up until that final panel. Weaving the threads and adding little touches that almost had you thinking you were getting into an old horror movie.

Trent is the lone Red Coat and he never seems to catch a break but with this story he really ought to be building up a loyal readership. Hands up -I never expected this from a series starring a Mountie!

  2. Hi. Trent is set at the time when the red coat was still worn on daily duty so no problem with it being worn in these books,
