Is The Cover to Avengers #34 (2020) Awful? I Say Thee -Tis!

Keep Matteo Scalera away from cover art. Unfortunately I had no alternative but to buy the issue with this cover.

Black Panther looks okay as far down as the chest. WTF happened to his legs is anyone's guess. Out of proportion and don't you dare say "perspective" because this is a bad drawing. I tried to work out what the dark object was in his hand...oh, it's the turn over in Cap's boot which appears to have been stretched  out and short than the one on the  (I'm guessing) right leg -not only is this leg more developed but it is twisted from the knee....and the ankle appears to have been shattered and twistedaway from the leg. As for Captain Marvel's deformed right leg...

I mean, Cap looks twisted and unnaturally contorted.

The worse thing is that I noticed this as soon as I took the book out of the envelope.

You expect "professional" artists to know about perspective and anatomy....was the editor out of his head when he passed this? Better look insiide and see who the editor was....

Oh. That explains it. Tom Brevoort.

AWFUL cover.

I wonder whether the seller will exchange for one with a properly drawn cover?

  1. Cap's leg definitely looks painful. Maybe the old soldier needs invaliding out. Either that or the artist(s) need to study their anatomy some more, take actual life drawing classes. Those sort of distortions can come from certain figure manipulation programs which shouldn't be relied upon as a sole means of reference - I won't mention which. These mistakes would be noticed and corrected for by an artist experienced and has, at heart, practiced knowledge from lengthy sessions with the living model or, at least, a photographic morgue made up of books and magazine cuttings. As soon as I saw these programs were prone to these problems - within the first few minutes of figure manipulation with the thing - I put the program in file and not touched it since. Sometimes, being 'old-fashioned' is best. That's the theory!

  2. I'm going for bad artwork. No editor should have allowed that to pass but, sadly, American editors today think "editing" involves Tweeting, lunching and insulting people. Brevoort woul;d do betterspending time looking into a fitness course.
