A few days after Fox broke a domestic box office record for its highest-grossing year ever, Fox International has now set a new industry benchmark for box office earned in a calendar year. Fox’s domestic take crossed $1.5B on October 19; including Fox Searchlight, the figure is $1.62B through October 27.

Among the movies that helped make the overseas milestone happen are such blockbuster titles as X-Men: Days Of Future Past ($512.1M intl cume), Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes ($499M), How To Train Your Dragon 2 ($438.4M), Rio 2 ($367.1M), The Fault In Our Stars ($178M), and current releases The Maze Runner ($209.5M) and Gone Girl ($142.9M). Local titles have also been successful in international markets including Bollywood pic Bang Bang, Korean pic Slow Video and Spain’s El Nino.

Still to come in global releases this year are the big-budget Exodus: Gods And Kings, starring Christian Bale and directed by Ridley Scott; the third installment of the Night At The Museum franchise, The Secret Of The Tomb; and DreamWorks Animation’s spinoff Penguins Of Madagascar which is getting one of the last China slots of the year on November 14.

Paul Hanneman, Co-President Worldwide Theatrical Marketing and Distribution said today, “Just as we were of the Fox domestic team when they recently achieved unprecedented results, we are incredibly proud of the international team for breaking the industry record. These records are a testament to the unparalleled strategic and creative work happening at Twentieth Century Fox.”
