Nice-ish cover. Look at those Avengers. Guess what? The Avengers do not appear in their own comic.

What we have is a somewhat messy 'story' about Kang. It has been established long ago ,and in detail in Avengers Forever, that when Kang hits a low point he heads back to ancient Egypt to rest.
In this issue there is an aside about when he acted in Shakespearean plays -having funded Shakespeare. It got very tedious very quickly. I do wonder whether MacKay has ever read an Avengers comic or a very good source book (the already mentioned Busiek, Stern and Pachecco Avengers Forever)?
Pina's art would suffice but the colour work by Blee is not good. In parts it looked like it was watery looking marker pens. I am not sure whether that is why it looked such a mess or not. Editor Moss is not doing a very good job here and he should be reminded, say by Cebulski, that the title is The Avengers but even before MacKay it became standard for the team to not appear or just one...if you are lucky maybe two.
This volume...are we on reboot volume 56 by now?...has been a disaster rather like previous ones. The Kang story is obviously a filler (honestly, it takes less than two minutes to read and I've re-read three times and it is still a mess.
Marvel comics is just a mess. I have no idea where they pick up their new writers but maybe they should have been left there a bit longer to learn how to develop stories and characters -all the characters are no longer individuals but cloned sociopaths. Yeah, yeah, Dr Doom will be in the MCU soon and that means even more titles becoming Dr Doom vehicles. Marvel and Cebulski need to get off of their asses and stop what used to -before Brubaker- an award winning title.
BRING BACK THE AVENGERS OR FER F SAKE CANCEL THE TITLE -no one would notice.
They can't Terry, if they do, they'll just have to make a new title: Avengers Disassemble !

DeleteBiggest joke in comics is that Ed Brubaker was brought in as the title under Busiek and Perez needed saving. They were winning story, writer and art awards` before Brubaker came in and really ***** it all up and since then it has gone steadily downhill. If you actually SEE an Avengers full team today (not associated with a movie franchise) it is a Key issue. Not many of them at all., It's just a mess.
