12 BC. Marcus Aemilius Lepidus, high priest of Rome and Agrippa the designated successor to the powerful Emperor Augustus, are mysteriously killed by eagles that tear at their bowels.

Alarmed by these events, Augustus asks his old friend Senator Gracchus Alix to investigate discreetly. Alix leads an investigation, assisted by his son Titus and Chephren (the son of the late  Enak  who Alix adopted ) on the trail of the enigmatic master of birds. Yet the danger persists in even closer to the emperor, getting more and more closely to him. Alix and will eventually discover that the most dangerous raptors have nestled in the heart of Rome, where no one could suspect …

A new story arc opens for the famous character created by Jacques Martin. Alix has become a Senator of Rome and the older Alix is about to face new and exciting adventures written  by Valérie Mangin and sumptuously illustrated by Thierry Demarez .

Hands up here: I am very spoilt. I get these books and then look at what is available in UK comic shops and just sigh out of frustration.

I’ve mentioned Jacques Martin’s Alix books before. All are nice and cleanly drawn with good detail. So when I saw this book cover my immediate thought was that it was just a plush cover for the usual Alix material.

I was so very wrong!

Look at these art pages.  They are just gorgeous. Demarez has fleshed out the characters and scenery and, though I do not like making comparisons between artists, the nearest this reminds me of is the late Don Lawrence. The mystery, intrigue and the attacks by the eagles is gripping to the end.

This is, indeed, a new era for the Alix series and one I will recommend very highly.
