Campfire’s latest Indian mythology title is hitting the bookshelves across India this week. Based on an episode from the Ramcharitmanas, Sundarkaand: Triumph of Hanuman is a gripping account of Hanuman’s role in the infiltration of Lanka. This graphic novel is completely faithful to the original, and picks up the story soon after Ravan abducts Sita.

Tulsidas’s Sundarkaand lends itself very well to the graphic novel medium, and Sachin Nagar (the artist) has exploited this to the full – depicting Hanuman as the larger than life, heroic superbeing that we all know him to be. The art style employed by Sachin is quite different to anything he, or Campfire, has attempted before. In his own words:
“I wanted to do something different with this title and so decided not to give Hanuman the realistic treatment I used in Ravana. The narration throughout the graphic novel is very pure, and so I decided to reflect this by using simple line art. However, the colouring has been carried out using complex compositions and textures.”
In addition to this, certain pages throughout the book have been illustrated in the Madhubani style, which provides a special treat for readers.
