Somewhere in the south, in summer, a small group of friends – two couples, two kids and a guide – are on an expedition into the wilderness for a great day of exploring canyons and hilly country. The isolation, the scenery and the thrill of danger will show how each reacts throughout the long day full of surprises as they find themselves alone silently facing their most intimate questions. And Juliet, the narrator, who soon perceives this special day as a sort of “litmus test” for her relationship with Luis. Is this beautiful summer day to be the final one of their relationship?
United by time, place and action, this seemingly simple narrative surprises and seduces both by its intimate and sensitive tone and the spectacular colour: this is the first album, full of originality, by a very talented young designer.
There are long sections where there is very little dialogue and yet (I’ll say it again) because European artists tend to be far better at sequential structure in story-telling (something many UK and US creators seem to have lost the knack of) it works. I believe that Spiry used to work in animation. The colour is warm and tickles the eye and there can be very little doubt a lot of thought went into this. On a wet, cold June day this book is a very strong anti-depressant!
