Lightning Strikes… The aims of The Birmingham Comics Festival include bringing award-winning international creators to the UK for the first time, paying homage to some of Great Britain’s finest, shining a light on the burgeoning talents of tomorrow, and presenting those important writers and artists who rarely step out into the limelight in a respectful environment to greet their fans. To that end, it is a privilege to announce that Richard Elsonwill be making a rare public appearance and attending The Birmingham Comics Festival that will be taking place at Edgbaston Cricket Ground on Saturday 18th April 2015.
Many have warm memories of Richard Elson’s awe-inspiring and fun art on Sonic the Comic from when they were kids, today’s readers wait exciteedly for the latest weekly serial adventures he produces for 2000AD or his drawings of such iconic superhero characters as The Mighty Thor and The Incredible Hulk for Marvel, and most recently bringing MarvelUK’s pantheon back into the parent company’s mainstream universe as the featured artist on the ground-breaking Revolutionary War.
The ability to invoke Jack Kirby’s raw energy into akinetic elliptical movement across the length of a comic page, wherein a foreshadowed expression or gesture belies a character’s intellectual thoughts or brash sense of humour are taken for granted in Richard Elson’s work. His art can be clean-lined or charismatically coloured, it is never less than entertainingly involving.Despite several television appearances demonstrating his art and the legendary queues that waited for him to sign copies of Sonic in the past, Richard Elson had foresworn conventions to concentrate on business and family, and develop hiscraft into other media; those last few shows he did attend were visited anonymously to catch up with old friends.
“It would be wonderful to claim personal friendships influenced Richard Elson’s decision to once more attend comic book conventions,” said a representative on behalf of the festival, “But the truth is the timing is right. Richard’s decision to connect and engage in conversation personally with his current fans is an important social event in comicdom, and we’re hoping that we can add depth to that on an emotional level by events involving his older ones too.” More of which at another date, it has been promised.
Suffice to say, the Sega Licence Award winning artist Richard Elson will be The Birmingham Comics Festival taking place at Edgbaston Cricket Ground on Saturday 18th April 2015 where he will be heavily involved; chatting with fans, signing comics as well as attending an exclusive convention signing. It should be noted he has also expressed an interest in being part of talk events – And he may well have a lot to say!
Richard Elson Biography:Rich Elson began his professional art career contributing strips to the weekly music newspaper Sounds (as did Alan Moore, Eddie Campbell and others) before going off to complete his studies in art. Engaged to draw Future Shocks and the Shadows series for 2000AD and illustrations for Dr Who Magazine he would subsequently do work on Marvels superhero line during their expansionist period drawing such characters as Motormouth & Kill power and was the cover artist for their Spider-Man comics through various title changes (resulting in his first of several TV appearances) but moved more into the licensed comics area on books such as Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles and found a niche drawing the exploits of Sonic the Hedgehog, first as a newspaper strip and then as the lead artist on Fleetways Sonic the Comic.

More Fun Guaranteed From The Birmingham Comics Festival The Birmingham Comics Festival is determined to put the word fun back into British comic shows and is excited that it can be announced that cartoonist Laura Howell has agreed to become involved, not least with the main event that will take place at Edgbaston Cricket Ground on Saturday 18th April 2o15. Laura’s work has been delighting readers of all ages in recent years, but it’s the kids of today who mainly get to enjoy her cartooning on a regular basis.
She is the first female artist to produce a regular strip in The Beano during its long and jolly lifetime and her work amusingly also appears regularly in Britain’s bestselling boys’ magazine, Toxic. From contributions to The Dandy, series for The DFC and inserts in The Guardian newspaper, on to publication within Blank Slate Books’ acclaimed Nelson anthology and America’s major satirical periodical Mad Magazine and the forthcoming Uncle Grandpa venture from BOOM! Studios (in collaboration with the Cartoon Network) each are in their own way a testament to her versatility and talent.
The recipient of an International Manga and Anime Festival award for The Bizarre Adventures of Gilbert & Sullivan in 2006, Laura’s able and inspired cartooning is matched by sharp, smart writing that is never patronising and knows when not to get in the way of a good slapstick joke. “Laura Howell’s a great talent and a charming individual that visitors to the show will enjoy meeting and talking to,” said a representative of The Birmingham Comics Festival. “We will be looking forward to her involvement just as much anyone.” Laura will be signing and sketching as well as offering her own unique line in comics for sale at the show, alongside becoming involved in other events to be announced.
