Cinebook Ltd Newsletter 191 - November 2023

Dear Reader,

Three new titles coming out is a blessing, but this month is all about disasters – both natural and man-made. Let’s be honest, though: in comics as in films, those make for some of the best entertainment. So, strap in!

In Largo Winch, for example, we start with nothing less than … a space shuttle crash! Sabotage, assassination attempts, heartless manoeuvring and financial manipulations … It’s all in a day’s work for Largo, sure, but fiery atmospheric re-entry is a first … and it only gets wilder from there!

Then there’s Yakari, whose tribe crosses the path of one of those terrible Great Plains tornadoes. After it has passed, the camp is in ruins, humans and animals are scattered everywhere … and it’s up to the young Sioux boy to locate several of them before it’s too late.

Finally, Jean Van Hamme’s sequel to Edgar P. Jacobs’s The U Ray is here at last, bringing answers and a conclusion 80 years in the making, and it’s got both: man-made catastrophe in the form of invasion and all-out war, and the wrath of nature – or perhaps it is the wrath of Puncha Taloc, the God of Fire. Either way, it’s spectacular and exciting, like the best pulp fiction!

November with Cinebook – the real tragedy would be not to read!

Thank you to everyone who came to see us at Thought Bubble in Harrogate. It was good to be back on the festival and convention trail after a long hiatus, and you guys definitely made our day. See you next time, we hope !

The Complete Phantom Detective

36 Pages
Price: £6.00 (excl. VAT)Ships in 3–5 business days

Murdering Ghouls. Satanic Masses. Demonic Possession. Werewolves. Poltergeists. Vampires. To many of the uninitiated these are just “things that go bump in the night” -TV or film fantasy.

In the Victorian era, The Phantom Detective used his decades of occult study to help those in danger from these “things” and he paid the ultimate price…. ….

Yet he continues to help and to observe as best he can for now he is a true...

From one of the UK's most under -rated comic creators, Ben R. Dilworth, comes new life breathed into and a new slant given to the adventures of the former mortal who has become one of the Watchers -forbidden to act even to save a life from supernatural forces.  Except "rules are there to be broken or at the very least stretched until you can see through them!"

The much anticipated collection from the co-creator of Peter Wisdom and artist of Mark Millar's The Shadowmen!

The Purple Hood: Land of Hope and Glory

There has always been a Purple Hood. “The Kings Man” and then the international agent used by HM Government to deal with external and internal threats.

Mad men with nuclear bombs.

Organised drug cartels.

Power hungry dictators.

The Britton family have always been Purple Hoods. The Purple Hood is precise and clinical in his work. But above all else those wearing the Hood have had guidance from their consciences. So when the military stand idly by, unable to act when civilians are massacred –when politicians only draw up policy and blow warm air….. ...does the Purple Hood –does John Britton– sit back on his hands idly awaiting a change in policy?

Or does John Britton pull on the Hood and say: “Enough! The line is drawn and crossed!”

Time for the bad men to run.

Time to hide. Or time to die!

As relevant today as you can be

Ben Dilworth writes and draws this mini epic.

TheThinker No. 1

From within the Plain of Absoluteness where Actuality crosses with Counter Actuality and interstitial space is the highway comes The Thinker. Surveying the world -our own?- and looking for a glimmer of light in the eternal darkness of existence.

Sit back and prepare for some mind warping!

Halcon Lord of the Craterland No. 1

Halcon Lord of the lost craterland. Created by Nat Brand (Len Fullerton) in 1940 for Swan Comics and seen occasionally in various Black tower titles now gets his own one off books thanks to Ben Dilworth.

Action and fun all the way with stories such as -

"Alligator", "Lake Monster", "Monkey", "Pteranodon", "Into the Moon" and "Alien".

The twist ending to "Werewolf" even had the old bearded one surprised!

The Problem With A Creative Brain That Hates Me

I am drawing one book -The Year of the Werewolf as one book not in parts. I am also going through in my head the Chronal War storyline, scenes and dialogue, the same with D-Gruppe: The Return From Space and, out of the blue, my mind gets images of characters in a huge space filled with high rectangular columns and weird architecture -as well as scenes ands dialogue.

I cannot stop this. Often I do a quick sketch even if its 0300hrs (who needs sleep?) as with the above.  I was not kidding when I said I had enough ideas to keep a small company going for a year.

I am NEVER going to live long enough to start half the stuff in my head....I have to draw it all!

Cinebook Ltd: Newsletter 190 - October 2023

Dear Reader,

This month, there’s a whiff of revolution in our new titles, a hint of upheaval … and the certainty of excitement. Ready to meet our troublemakers?

First, the focus in Thorgal has shifted to his son Jolan, and the supernaturally gifted young Viking finds himself tasked with nothing less than leading an army to storm Asgard, realm of the Gods! Don’t worry, though – Thorgal himself is still around, and fate has more trouble in store for him.

The third volume of The Fortune of the Winczlavs concludes the story of Largo Winch’s family, taking us to 1965 Yugoslavia and through the tragic history of this region of the world in the late 20th Century – a Communist dictatorship followed by devastating civil war. It also offers us a more detailed portrait of Largo’s adoptive father Nerio, a figure that looms large in the main series but didn’t get much chance to develop. And yes, we finally get to know who Largo is exactly!

Finally, XIII’s world has been irrevocably changed after the previous episode, and it appeared that the same was true of our hero, who … joined the ‘Dark Side’! But his friends haven’t given up on him just yet. Or … have they? Find out in this prison escape caper with multiple twists, set in beautiful Cuba – and expect poor McLane’s life to be turned upside down once again!

October with Cinebook – read all about it!
