Third Annual Clallam Bay Comicon scheduled.

The 2014 Clallam Bay Comicon will be held July 12-14, in the Clallam Bay Lion's Club and Fire Hall.

An unusual schedule for this third year invites attendees to enjoy Clallam Bay/Sekiu Fun Days on Saturday, then attend the comicon itself Sunday and Monday. The new schedule allows many comic shops and local businesses to appear at the comicon. Admission is still free to the public.

All creative arts - comics and prose books (of any genre) and poetry, magic, animation, gamers, jewelry, gallery artists, steampunk. cosplay, carving, quilts and fabric arts, musicians, dancers, basket-weaving, twig furniture, fancy fishing poles -- are welcome to show and sell in the large vendor space.

Reasons WHY One Day CBO Will Not Be Here.

There comes a time when you think to yourself that you have to stop doing a certain thing. At 0430 hrs this morning I very nearly deleted this blog.  Why?

Firstly, as with the old CBO on WordPress (which started in 2007) that took over the old CBO on Yahoo 360 and Freeservers, there are a very high number of visitors. However, comments are rarely left.  There were 6,312 posts on the previous CBO and some 1000 comments -most were from trouble makers (very small minded and balding trolls) or people just trying to get their own blogs mentioned!

The occasional blog related comment was welcome.

Since starting this Blogger CBO up again there have been a lot of trolls but they were gotten rid of quickly.  Lots of people just plain trying to be a pain. But out of the thousands visiting this site...no comments about the posts.

Are these people just thinking "What's this CBO?" clicking on and then going with no interest? 

I post reviews. I post items on Manhua, Manhwa and a few on Manga, on German comics, French comics, Russian comics, old British comics -as wide a diversity of posts covering comics. I may as well just be reading or learning this stuff and keeping it all stored in my head. I have no idea if all the effort of scanning, uploading, researching and writing posts has solicited any interest what-so-ever.

There is also the problem that I review every single book received and I am very pro supporting the Small Press (read the About me bit and you'll see why), Small Press events or even smaller local comic events. After 13(?) years of CBO with the same email address there is no reason why organisaers/publishers cannot get in touch -"Oh, we couldn't find out how to contact you!" -utter bullshit since two people who said this were (WERE) on my Face Book friends list.   I am THE most contactable person in British comics.

And when you see "friends" on FB mentioning a "great event today" and realise that they never even mentioned there was an event you do give up.  The day before -DAY BEFORE- an event you get a press release at 1930 hours and it's expected you'll promote that event.

I have supported so many events -even ones I don't go to- over the years and the thanks is a general "Why do we need to let him know" (IF they even remember me).

The same for publishers who I supported and pushed via CBO and at events -all non-paying- but when they get established or "cool" they drop me without a word. That is just sheer ingratitude.

Even more galling are the publishers who list the sites reviewing their books....but forget CBO.

Creators who no one could be bothered with I've interviewed or lined up to interview -I've lost count of the number who suddenly say they can't do the CBO interview because "my mate wants to interview me for his blog he's starting" or simply "I'm holding out for a while as I want to try to get on CBR but if that doesn't work out I'll get back to you" -really? I'm no longer interested.

CBO has been an unpaid job that takes up a lot of time and effort -time and effort I could spend on promoting my own Black Tower Comics.

I've had adsense on five of my blogs for more than a year. Adsense is raking in the money from these adverts but do you know how much I have earned in that time with their ads on my site?  Well, 6 pence. Seriously? It's why I removed adsense -the idea of funding CBO via that was a joke.

I am not going to knock myself out any more.  What appears will appear as and when I feel like it because, as far as I know I'm the only one reading this stuff. If you click on one day and find the blog gone....

'Batwoman' Creative Team Quits After DC Comics Nixes Lesbian Marriage Storyline

Interesting piece of news. First we had this:

Harley is sitting in an alligator pond, on a little island with a suit of raw chicken on, rolling her eyes like once again, she cannot believe where she has found herself. We see the alligators ignoring her.

Harley is sitting in an open whale mouth, tickling the inside of the whale’s mouth with a feather. She is ecstatic and happy, like this is the most fun ever.

Harley sitting naked in a bathtub with toasters, blow dryers, blenders, appliances all dangling above the bathtub and she has a cord that will release them all. We are watching the moment before the inevitable death. Her expression is one of “oh well, guess that’s it for me” and she has resigned herself to the moment that is going to happen."

 

Now we get this. DC Comics really needs to get its finger out of its ass.

"Batwoman" comic writers say DC Comics prohibited a wedding between the female superhero and her girlfriend.

The co-writers of "Batwoman" are leaving DC Comics at the altar.

In a blog post late Tuesday, artist JH Williams III and writer W. Haden Blackman announced their split from DC — alleging that it prohibited their female, openly gay superhero from getting married.

"In recent months, DC has asked us to alter or completely discard many long-standing storylines in ways that we feel compromise the character and the series," Williams and Blackman wrote.

They cited a number of "eleventh-hour" changes that included, "most crushingly," instructions to never show Batwoman tying the knot with fiancé Maggie Sawyer.

"Batwoman" relaunched in 2011 as a five-part series telling a new origin story for the female Caped Crusader.

The comic follows army brat Kate Kane who is expelled from West Point after rumors surface saying she is a lesbian. She briefly meets Batman and embarks on a mission to protect Gotham City from a growing contingent of supernatural criminals.

Batwoman's fiancé, Maggie Sawyer, is a policewoman in Gotham City.

Since its start, the comic has served as a pillar of LGBT advocacy. In the ground-breaking Issue 17, Batwoman proposed to girlfriend and policewoman Maggie Sawyer. It marked the first lesbian marriage proposal in mainstream comics history, according to The Hollywood Reporter.


She isn't the first gay character.
DC's Green Lantern came out of the closet last summer, and Marvel's Canadian superhero Northstar and his boyfriend got hitched in a 2012 issue of "The Astonishing X-Men."

According to Comics Alliance, Batwoman's origin was inspired by the U.S.'s "controversial real-life policies concerning homosexuals serving in the armed forces."

The character ultimately belongs to DC Comics, so when Williams and Blackman felt cornered, they walked.

"We felt that the series and characters should always be moving forward, to keep changing and evolving," the co-writers said in their blog. "We’re both heartbroken over leaving, but we feel strongly that you all deserve stories that push the character and the series forward."

Williams responded to an outpouring of support from fans on Twitter, and addressed the marriage refusal on DC's part.

The pair seemed to be referencing DC's recent editorial moves to sever relationships between super-couples, including Superman and Lois Lane, the Flash and Iris West, and Green Arrow and Black Canary, according to Comics Alliance.

Other "Batwoman" changes DC allegedly ordered: ditch plans for Killer Croc's origins, alter the original ending of the current story arc, and abandon long-standing plot lines that "compromised the character and the series."
Williams and Blackman's last issue, #26, hits shelves in December.

X-Men Battle of...the....zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

 

Okay, I get that Marvel are trying to move more into Sci Fi but watch this B3 Comics guide and you'll see how messy things are getting.

But above all else when are comic buyers going to use their brains and realise they are being screwed for every penny by all the tie-ins (something Marvel and DC comics promised never to do again some years back. However, I think they both died and got rebooted so none of that matters now).

Now DC with all the one off Evil Pays (or whatever its called) covers in 3D. Yes, they look cool but.....

And people still lap this up.

Incidentally, by 10 m 17 secs into this video I just said "who the **** cares?!!"

Sorry, B3Comics guys (link to right on blog links) it IS informative but...I just don't care.

After almost five decades of being a Marvel fan it's just all gone dead for me.

Marvel and DC don’t care. The greed is what matters.  Didio and Quesada will just keep smiling while playing with themselves and a bundle of pay cheques.

It’s very depressing.

From Russia (Formerly the CCCP) With Love...well, comics from Russia!

Now then, after my posting of the Russian Tarzan comics on CBO http://hoopercomicart.blogspot.co.uk/2013/09/or-tarzan-russian-comic-series.html I did promise to show a few more of my Russian collection.

Well, it seems a lot were pilfered -and in this case I know by whom.  However I do have a few left but not all conform to "comics" as I'll explain.  And I do apologise for not being able to name all of these -my notes were in one of the pilfered books and trying to translate the titles now...well, they don't make sense.  So, if any of our Russian visitors can help please do!

The first book is a childrens illustrated history. Its from 1990 and below is the cover. There were 16 pages comprising of an illustration, rather crude, with text opposite as you'll see.

 

 

This next one, again, no translation of the publication but I allways joked that it was the "Western decadence invasion" issue.

Pretty straight forward cover.  Not much to grab you?

 The above -"Fantasy"  is quite charming and something of a style you might find in Western comics though I cannot find a credit.

Below: A text feature and on the same page a three panel humorous Tarzan strip. Tarzan sure got around in Russia.  I think the text item is looking at an East German childrens film -East Germany was the main source of comics back then -how many got translated into Russian I've no idea. East German tv series such as "Tales From Europe" were sold everywhere -including the UK.

  

Below, well, the title says it all: "What Are Comics?"  You might think the more hip Marvel Comics characters would have been in the illo!  I did once have a translation of this and, yes, it really is telling readers what comics are and a little history.  Oh those innocent days.

 

 Yes. Bugs Bunny -a two page article looking at the character in his 50th year -my A3 scanner died so I could not show the entire centre spread.

 

 Another side-tier cartoon strip and....CHUCK gaddam NORRIS??!!  Seriously? I guess he was more known for his martial arts back them.  For some reason I find this funny.  But Mikhael Gorbachev had been pressing for reforms so the West was gradually creeping in (where was I during the attempted coup in August 1991...I...was...NOT...in Russia!!).

 This back page strip in interesting. Basically, one balloon is saying "West" and pulling in that direction while the other shouts "East" and pulls that way...the end result for our furry friend is plain to see.  This really was an historic issue because of the situation at the time and that comics, Bugs Bunny and even Chuck Norris were being introduced to youngsters.

Unlike the November 1990 issue, above, the December issue was back to text features and a few illustrations.....

 

 Yes, our furry friend survived on and was the back cover comic strip. I'd really like to find out far more about this character, strip and creator.

 

Again, lost the title to this October, 1990 children's magazine  which is mainly stories will illustrations as you'll see below the cover.

  

 Now I have mentioned Murzilka before and here is no.3 from 1988 which flies the CCCP symbol proudly up on its cover (top left).  I have seen these advertised on ebay as "Russian Comics" and not cheaply either.  In fact, these were mainly story and educationally based with only two pages of comic strip as shown following this cover.

 

 The same characters from above feature in the 1990 issue no.10...anyone notice that a certain symbol is now missing?  As far as I am aware Murzilka remained in this format but if anyone can tell me more I am interested.

But, if you think about buying from an ebay seller, ask for confirmation it HAS comic strips because none of those I contacted will respond to my emails!!

 

As I think I've written before, I did one interview about comics for Russia but I also created a lot of characters -and drew many of them.  Were they ever published? Well, not legally that I know of since the publisher who was also a printer had his workshop blown up by a rocket-propelled grenade...

Yes, folks, comics can be fun but it can also be darn-tooting dangerous at times.  RPG....I once got a really -REALLY- bad paper-cut while putting together some comics.

Finding What's Missing And Finding So Much...Weird!!

 When I was a young lad. eeh, 'eck, way back when good Queen Victoria twere on throne...

No, that's just going to confuse all the foreign CBO visitors.

When I was younger I had two dreams (that I can tell you about!) -to publish/write/draw comics and to work for Marvel Comics.  Well, Marvel Comics died for me and my other choice of company was Archie -but one characters such as The Mighty Crusaders.  The heroes.

But as a kid I picked up all sorts of comics -my prized "Quarto format" (Digest) Tex Willer 100 pager is long gone.  But I picked up what I could afford and up until the 1970s seeing a Marvel or DC comic was still hit-or-miss...it didn't really improve that much in the 1970s. And my grand dad, Bill, used to buy me comics -not sticking to a regular title but picking up what he thought I might like -my first comic was The Robin.

Then there was The Topper, Dandy and so on. I grew up on an eclectic mix.  Even finding one of my fathers porno mags saw critical perusal. I have no idea if it was Parade or something like that but it had a photo comic Casanova story. 

 I looked at the costumes, the interiors -the photographs were excellent quality, very eye-catching colour. I had no interest in what I now recall was very lame sexual antics!  Maybe that stood me in good stead when I wrote best selling porno erotic adult fiction best sellers for Fantagraphic Books Eros Comix.

But I was soaking this all in.

I always spoke to people writing, drawing, though mainly running/owning comic companies.  I knew the ins and outs of printers tricks to bump up prices as well as those of the "industry" to make money back through double or even very poor book keeping.  Ahh, the time before computers!

But I learnt how much each printed comic cost, how much you would need to sell it for and how many sales were needed to break even and even how to use the old books after their week or month of being on sale.

So, when I first hopped boyishly into comics I knew a lot...but not enough about the ..."dubious" people working in comics. I bought rights from Thorpe & Porter, Mylon Fass (very annoying being continuously referred to as "kid") and others.

As I moved into comics as a writer, artist, editor and artists agent, I spoke more to old pros and to people just getting established in the industry. I learnt the dirty tricks used by publishers to not pay them and, eventually, I began pushing for Creators Rights --apparently a good deal of my work dried up because I was "blacked" by certain companies.  I do wonder whether it was worth it as creators in the UK start to bleat on about never asking for Creators Rights!!!

 Eventually, through my work as well as correspondence, I made contact with comickers in other countries. I learnt the ins and outs of their native industries, the problems, the movers and shakers and the crooks.

From Japan, China, Korea, India, Russia, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands as well as Australia, New Zealand and, of course, the USA, I had publishers contact me to try and help them get into the UK market or find out the pros and cons of which genre might sell better than another.

I produced annual British comic industry reports which, by the final one (2005) had an accuracy of 96%.  Universities and libraries, researchers -lots of people wanted full lectures on comics and what to do, avoid and so on.

I gave up the Agents work in the mid 1990s -the same time I quit acting as a UK rep for US Independents (a long story for another day).

But I got to speak, correspond and meet up with these publishers and my collection has so many first issues of titles!

It was only while looking at the list of publishers in my collection (not complete yet) that I realized just how much I had read and how varied the art and publishers were.  Yes, I love comics as an art form but after 40+ years (scarily, I just realized its more like 50 years)  of collecting comics my Independent comics number almost as many as my Marvel and DC comics.

That is why people come to me for advice or information. Because, sadly, I have no real life but a brain full of comics!

So I thought I would just present the preliminary list of publishers in my collection. I've outlasted many of the publishers and comics which is sad because so many had potential.  But I learnt what mistakes they made.
