The long awaited new volume in this elegant series by Beuriot and Richelle, and each episode is surprisingly neat new episode. As usual , this volume 6 shows a deep concern for historical accuracy , provides a credible sense of detail and finesse work on the nuances of human psychology.

Allright, I’ve checked and as far as I can find, I have never seen a volume in this series before. It is a pet peeve of mine, and I’d guess most serious reviewers, that a book turns up and you are expected to read it and write a glowing review about characterization, developments in plot and so on yet you are receiving volume 4, 5, 6 or, in one case, the last volume in a very complex six volume series. Yes, great detailed artwork in every aspect but I seriously have no reader emotion invested in any of the characters. I am certainly not able to write anything like “Martin’s character has grown since his first appearance blah blah blah…”

Nice book. Nice art. That’s it.

Giani and Noureddine grew up together in St. Nazaire. One is the son of Italian immigrants, the other Kabyle parents who arrived more recently in France, after the war in Algeria. They are united as friends for life.

But as they grow, and they become like the senior workers in the shipyards where they work, Noureddine becomes radicalized. A rebel Lord whose anger feeds off  the silence of his father Lounès, he suspects of hiding away during the Algerian conflict. During the confrontation Noureddine plays up having to flee to Algeria –a land he has never seen.  Giani , his friend forever,  joins up and his unit ship off to Algeria where he will learn a great deal through painful experience.

A  series of flashbacks are used to discover what Lounès during the Dirty War, and why it has been hidden for so long behind a wall of silence ...

I'm still fascinated by the Algerian War and the impact it still has on some French people -many too young to have been alive at the time.  I always wonder why it is we are not inundated, in the UK, with graphic novels about the "Troubles" in Northern Ireland?

Interesting book and sad ending.

There are some excellent sketches and illustrations in this book with the cityscapes being amongst the best. "Obese Super Hero" is wonderful -mainly because it shows off some great detailed NY architecture and plumps a, well, obese super hero in the street in front of it.

Definitely for those interested in fine art.

November 22, 1963 , the date is historical: that day  the world learned that President John F. Kennedy had been shot in public during a visit to Dallas, Texas. Exactly fifty years after this event of global significance, the case of Dallas continues to fascinate , and the mystery remains: even if an "official" and controversially guilty, Lee Harvey Oswald, had been the sole assassin involved why did he choose JFK?

On November 22, 2013 , the anniversary of the attack, Arte will broadcast a documentary inspired by this bloody event : Dallas, a special day that will be quickly extended to a DVD .

Always been fascinated by all facets of American myth, Christian De Metter designed, from the documentary, a series of twenty- five paintings inspired by the tragedy of Dallas and its environment. This high level of graphic work echoes a text by director Patrick Jeudy, which also evokes the exceptional dimension to all points of view, of this major event in our recent history.

Their joint creation, in the form of a beautiful illustrated book in landscape format also called Dallas, will be out in bookstores the same time as the documentary. This publication is accompanied by an exhibition in a Parisian gallery.

I was six years old when Kennedy was assassinated.  In 1961 there had been the aborted invasion of Cuba known as The Bay of Pigs.  Cuban Missile Crisis. On each occasion people around me thought World War III was about to start. A sigh of relief must have come as things settled.  When JFK was killed and rumours spread I was very aware of the talk of war with the USSR –the world really was in a panic.

But fifty years on I still have no idea why JFKs assassination has become a legendary event –almost a myth if you believe half the TV programmes, books or conspiracy theorists.  It was a very tragic day and the space age hopes and dreams of the Americans had probably never even dared believe that their President could be murdered –they were still fairly innocent days.

If you can read French well then the text won’t cause you too many problems. There are some nice paintings intermixed with photographs from the event itself and a very striking cover!

Après Périples imaginaires et Périples secrets, un troisième voyage très qualitatif à travers les bandes dessinées en noir et blanc du maître italien.

Dazzling Journeys

After the first two volumes in this collection, Imaginary Journeys and Secret Journeys, Casterman presents a third looking at the black and white work of the great Italian comics master, Hugo Pratt.

In the first volume,  Périples Imaginary, the water-color work of Hugo Pratt was looked at –this was in 2005 to mark the tenth anniversary of his death.  Then, in  Périples Secrets, a volume that was designed to echo the large Pratt exhibition scheduled in spring 2009, in Cherbourg, and focused more on hid drawing using ink , charcoal and gouache. This third volume of the work of the maestro, is entitled Dazzling Journeys.

Edited with great care, this book, like previous volumes, is an extensive (over 400 pages) large and beautiful collection focussing exclusively on Pratt’s comics in black and white. It is organized by theme, and sixty distinct themes – each illustrated by extracts from albums and covers the entire work of Pratt in comics  --Corto, Ernie Pike, Fort Wheeling , etc.. Including some unpublished or little-known sides of the creator, such as his "Argentine period" prior to the 1960s .

This is top quality production-wise and one heavy book –I hurt my wrist lifting it!  (I am old, you know).

As for the contents.  Well, much as I would have loved to have seen the previous two volumes, I have this one and what a book it is. 

Firstly, there is a lengthy text feature and I looked at it and just thought that reading it for someone with my very basic French was impossible. As I flicked through I thought “I’m reading this very well”…then the penny dropped as we used to say in the 20^th century.  Captions to illustrations as well as the text feature are in English, French and Italian!!

Oh joy!

A great read and made it so much easier to find out more about Pratt’s work.  Ink sketches/roughs, samples from Pratt’s War, Western and historical comics. Milton Caniff influenced many comic book artists –Steve Dowling, the creator of Garth; Mike Western –British comics great amongst them— here that influence in Pratt’s work is discussed.  And I say “influence” because Pratt was a true and undisputable Master of black and white comics and illustration.

The incredible use of negatives meant that Pratt’s solid black inks was so precise and spot on that the white areas were almost a work of art in themselves. There is a balance between the black ink and white paper in panels that some get so tragically wrong.  Only one other artist I know really knew how to hit that balance –Alex Toth. You can literally drown a panel or page in black ink –study Pratt (or Toth) and you will see how greats work.

75 Euro is expensive as it works out, currently, as £62 or $101 US.  That said, if you are really –really- either into European Bande Dessinee or Hugo Pratt this is an amazing book.  And it tends to put to shame all those US published comic masterworks of ----- that you see (and, crazily, this book is cheaper than some of those!).

Very highly recommended.

I am truly sorry. Why? Firstly, because I had to read this. Secondly, because, well, I had to read this.  

"This incredible re-imagining"...This incredible floater is more like it.  The production values on this collection are high. There is a nice covers gallery which REALLY pads out the book and there are some nice images there as well as some that are pretty awful.

"Mark Waid is one of comics' most highly respected and popular writers" -it says. I think certain writers get far too much over-hyping. Yeah, Waid has written some good comics.  That's it. All that reputation is wiped out by this current book. 

Based around the infamous Hellfire Club episode of The Avengers TV series...well, that's it. The plot is far from imaginative. It is quite dull, formulaic and at times messy.  The "script" by Caleb Monroe (who I am informed writes the Peanuts Comic for Boom!) is turgid. How did Steed and Peel talk in the TV series? Absolutely NOTHING like this. It is just plain awful and at times embarrassing to read -how an American might think British people might talk and who had, in fact, never watched an episode of The Avengers.

Now, of course, any Avengers fan remembers just how sexy Diana Rigg looked (as Mrs Peel of course) in that infamous dominatrix gear. A "similar" scene in this collection might well look sexy to a blind man. Sliney's art I am not familiar with and in the small press or doing a comic for fun then, okay. If he gets paid for it then good on him. But it is not good. Bad anatomy. Bad...quite a lot of bad.  At times the famously impeccably dressed Steed looks as though he was thrown naked down a laundry chute and had to grab whatever was to hand -even in such a case Steed would come out looking impeccable. Not here.

I have read the book twice now and that was punishment enough.  Story/script: 0 out of 10. Art 0 out of 10.

As an Avengers fan I felt insulted by this and just wondered how the ***** hell anyone gave permission for shit like this to be attached to the world-wide brand The Avengers. 

I would not recommend this in any way. Believe me, I tried -TRIED- to find something positive. Nice cover shame about the contents...?

Ormai - visto il nostro passaggio a Lucca Comics & Games, con tanto di cartoline e stand - non dovrebbe essere una vera e propria novità la notizia dello spostamento di BILBOLBUL 2014 - che tutti si aspettavano nella tradizionale collocazione primaverile - nei giorni compresi tra il 21 e il 23 NOVEMBRE dell'anno prossimo.
La novità vera, forse, sta nel modo in cui abbiamo deciso di dirlo.

Da qualche giorno, una serie di video autoprodotti da fumettisti e da utenti della rete, contrassegnati dall'hashtag #BILBOLBUG, ha fatto la propria comparsa sui social network.

La dinamica è sempre la stessa: il filmato cattura la reazione che colpisce chi è stato investito dalla rivelazione del primo segreto dell'Ottava Edizione di BILBOLBUL!
