I'll Make It Clear

I appear to have annoyed/confused/angered some people by stating I may not continue CBO next year. The thing is that if I am not publishing new books and earning money to live on and there is only 1% (in reality it doesn't even come out as 1% but it's the best I can come up with) response to any postings from the 2000+ who visit here each day then what is it that should persuade me to continue?

A blog with this many visitors/hits and that has been going for 15 or so years cannot generate revenue. No publisher is even willing to consider paying for an ad and I have tried everyone who has benefited from CBO over those years.

Companies NOT short of a little spare cash.  They WILL take every free piece of free publicity they can get to keep sells coming and even state CBO is a "vital" part of that.  So, it's okay for me to spend all day editing some very bad Press Releases -some not including basic info such as...how to order a book!- and writing up posts taking my time and energy for nothing.  But they will not even reciprocate by a link to CBO or helping out in practical ways?

I dropped event PRs for the same reason -you should really see the awful stuff I get that is supposed to be a "press release" with bad spelling, no real info and images I have to spend a lot of time on to make usable.

I've supported and pushed UK comics since the 1970s.  Result for me -ZERO and nothing but crap.

I've heavily supported the UK Small Press since the 1970s.  Result for me -EXACTLY the same though I did expect better from Small Pressers for some reason.

What have I gotten out of CBO all these years?  Headaches, LOTS of abuse and I've wasted more time than I want to think about.  I sat down last night and realised that had I kept everything posted on CBO only in my head then it would have had the same impact: a wet feather impacting on concrete.

I know six people who read CBO and that's it. Many thousands of others I only see stats on. That is no reward after 15 years.

So, yes, I am quite willing to just stop CBO here and now.

Adieu, adieu to yieu and yieu....

After all the recent events I have to say that, yes, from the way things are going, there will be no new publications from Black Tower in 2016.

For September the cover price for books were slashed heavily to try and entice in a few buyers.  Nothing. Which is what I expected and so disappointment does not come into it.  Publishing is not a hobby for me -it's supposed to be a business.  I've tried everything but comic buyers don't care as long as they get their puerile DC and Marvel constant reboots.

The store will stay online because it takes far more effort than I care to give to delete it all.  It's not costing me anything which is good because it does not earn me anything.

For a serious comic publisher the UK is dead. I'm not even going to discuss it as that was done in my last ever post on the subject.

The planned 2016 comic event in Bristol.  Also very unlikely to go ahead now.  Everyone who was really "100 per cent behind this" has decided not to bother.  I am not spending almost £1000 of my money on a day event to sell my own books -it might be more rewarding to put the bank notes in a toilet and flush them away.

There is a point when you have to walk away.  I'm walking away.

Next year I am concentrating on Europe as it is very unlikely there will be a CBO -I am not helping others sell their books without it being a two-way deal and publishers will not do that.

So warning given.

Sven Hassel's iconic war novel, WHEELS OF TERROR, is brought vividly to life in this graphic novel, illustrated by Jordy Diago.
A graphic novel adaptation of Sven Hassel's classic war novel, WHEELS OF TERROR, illustrated by Jordy Diago.

Stationed on the Eastern Front and now equipped with armoured vehicles, Sven Hassel and his comrades from the 27th Penal Regiment fight on remorselessly . . . All of them should be dead: life expectancy on the Front is measured in weeks. But Sven, Porta, the Old Un and the Legionnaire fight to the end, not for Germany, not for Hitler, but for survival.

From the blistering cold to the horrors of tank warfare, WHEELS OF TERROR is a sobering depiction of war's brutalities, and the violence and inhumanity that the history books leave out.
Biographical Notes

Sven Hassel was born in 1917 in Fredensborg, Denmark. He began writing LEGION OF THE DAMNED during his time as a prisoner of war. His 14 Second World War books draw on his own encounters and experiences as a soldier, and have been published in more than 50 countries. He peacefully passed away in Barcelona in 2012, where he had resided since 1964.

Jordy Diago is an artist, illustrator and photographer from Spain.

It must be me because I expected that, having such great source material to base a graphic novel on...well, that a better artist might have been found.

I think that if this is the best artist Orion could find then we are lost.  The story is still gripping, though, obviously, adapted from a rather chunky novel and Hassel's novels were almost obligatory reading back in the 1960s/1970s.  Even old soldiers remarked "It's as nasty as the real thing".  No complaints there. In a way. however, the final words in this adaption just left me saying "oh. Right". Nothing.

The UK has a fine tradition of having the best war comic illustrators -or did- whether from the the UK like John Cooper or Mike Western or from Europe and South America.  So I have to ask "why Diago?" The faces are grotesque, out of proportion and being honest the heads would need to be deformed to wear helmets the way the characters in this book do. Even figures are not the best.

It just looks so amateurish -if this were a Small Press effort I might be a little kinder but this is supposed to be a professional company and book.  I note no one seems to take credit as the editor of this book which means either there was none or whoever did the job failed miserably.

This book does not live up to its publicity.  The more I go through it the worse it seems and for me that is not good. To say I am very disappointment is the best I can write.

If you see a copy check it out -you may totally disagree with me but I hope this is the first and last adaption of Hassel by Diago.

Silvermaigne:Knight Ghoul Hunter

Ben R. Dilworth

Paperback,
A4
Black & White
42 Pages
Price: £5.00
The Silvermaigne line is said to go back to the time of the Ancient Britons.
Silvermaignes ancestors were part of a druidic clan based in the great forest that is today known as Leigh Woods, overlooking the River Severn entering (today) Bristol. All the members of the tribe had white hair from birth and they were known as the mwng arian (Silver Manes).
Even the druids bowed to their knowledge of demons, spirits and things of the darkness.
But at a point several centuries ago the family split and took two paths -one embraced magik for its own fight against evil.  The other renounced the use of personal magik so as not to become tainted and seduced by it.
For the first time Ben Dilworth looks at the latter branch of the Silvermaigne family and what one of them endures to keep the fight Holy!

A4
327 Pages
Heavily illustrated
Price: £15.00
Follow-up to the hugely successful Some Things Strange & Sinister.

For those interested in Ufology, cryptozoology, hominology, unusual natural history, ghosts and mysteries in general.

The secret history of gorillas in the UK -before they were officially  'discovered'. The history of  the Wild men of Europe, the UK and US: something that in the 1800s become very "pop culture"  Very pop culture and totally forgotten today!

Hominology. Sasquatch and Bigfoot -is there evidence for their existence?  No sitting on the fence here -the Patterson-Gimlin film is looked at as well as other evidence.  The Author's conclusions? You might be surprised.

Giant snakes. Amazons. The Giant serpent of Carthage. The Girt Dog of Ennerdale -another big cult 'creature' amongst paranormal and cryptozoological circles. The Beast of Gevaudan -what was it and were there really descendents of the creature in the 19th century -one of which was actually brought to London?

Believe it or not more than one incident of historical crocodiles cases in the UK.  In fact, far more than even the Author had thought .

And, after more than a century of claims by 'researchers' that it no longer exists: The Silent City of Alaska and the near legendary 'lost' photograph taken of it.

This and much more. Updated with extra pages and photographs.

Those U.S.O., Sea Monsters, Giant Squid And Things That Go “Bloop”   11

                                         Things On Land

On The Scientific 'Need' To Kill A Sasquatch   111

Dmitri Bayanov and the anti “kill a Sasquatch” argument and John Green and John Steenburg on the need to kill a Sasquatch: is it necessary to kill an individual of what might be a rare relic population of hominids?

The Texas Bigfoot Research Conservancy Has Blood On Its Hands   117

The TBRC has now claimed to have shot and wounded Sasquatch creatures.  The Bigfoot community is up in arms that an organisation set up to research and conserve these creatures is apparently turning to the gun to “scientifically prove” the Sasquatch is real by producing a body.

On Gathering Hard evidence  122

Rather than kill a Sasquatch or any other unknown creature is there an alternative to prove they exist? The simple answer is “yes”.

The Patterson-Gimlin Film  129

Filmed in 1967, the brief footage of “Patty” was shaky and split the scientific community in two regarding its authenticity.  With the film now digitally cleaned, image steadied and modern scientific techniques used to analyse it why is it getting harder to believe it is a hoax?

No, South America Does Not Have A Sasquatch  142

South America from Patagonia up to Mexico has its own set of mysterious hominid creatures from the Mapirangua to Ucu.  The comparisons between the Yeti, Sasquatch and these creatures are striking; from basic tools to habitat.

Tales From A German Wood  152

Raccoon-like dogs, a mystery primate and much more seem to have focussed on a little village in Germany.

The Strange Case Of The Gotherington Gargoyle  156

UFO reports and the sighting by an off duty fireman of what he could only describe as a “hideous gargoyle” creature.

The Strange Creature of Repton Wood  165

UFO sightings and a report of a strange, bi-pedal fox-like creature that vanished into the ground!

The Star Child Hoax  170

The ‘alien-human hybrid’ hoax exposed but what was the “Chicken Man” –a real alien hybrid?

The Strange Creature On The Beach 188

Just what did a couple on holiday photograph on a German beach –a strange creature from out of time and space?

Photographic Evidence That Dinosaurs Exist?  195

The Kasai Rex photographs said to have been taken in the 1930s in two different parts of Africa are said to show dinosaurs still existed.  And what of the hunt for the African Brontosaurus –and what happened to Stevens?

First Ever UFO Photograph Or Proof Of Early Airships?  206

It is claimed to be the first ever UFO photograph and was taken on a mountain top in the United States in 1870 –the best evidence of UFOs in the past or experimental airship flights?

Two Early French Entity Cases 212

Did Masse encounter a landed flying saucer in 1965 and see two entities? And why did he vow never to reveal what happened during the encounter –taking the secret to his grave?  And what of Dewilde in 1954 –was he paralysed by a UFO while the occupants went about their business? Did his dog die because of the encounter?

End Word  221

Sasquatch DNA evidence breakthrough?  Did Justin Smeja deliberately shoot two Sasquatch creatures and will the evidence prove it?  How you can help gather information on the strange and weird.

The Bizarre Legends, Crimes And Truth About Spring Heeled Jack (2014)

The Truth About Spring-Heeled Jack
Terry Hooper-Scharf

Paperback,
53 Pages
 Dimensions (centimetres) 20.98 wide x 29.69 tall  (A4)
fully illustrated and referenced
Price: £7.00
The terror and mystery created by “Jack The Ripper” has been the subject of countless books, magazine articles as well as movies and TV documentaries. Ask anyone if they have ever heard of Jack The Ripper and it is doubtful anyone would respond with a “no idea.”

By that same token, ask people who “Spring-heeled Jack” was and you would be lucky to find anyone who had ever heard of him.

Spring-heeled Jack was the subject (loosely) of a film The Curse of the Wraydons (1946) and Dominic Keating also appeared as Spring Heeled Jack in the 2010 film Sherlock Holmes by The Asylum film company. The character has also featured in both American and British comic books and a number of books, for both children and adults.

But the fact that the Springald held the country –not just London– in a grip of terror much longer that the Ripper did is all but forgotten except for some half-truths and fanciful theories.

Now be prepared to read the full story of Spring Heeled Jack
And if any of that piqued your curiousity then, in 2016.....
