The actor co-starred opposite Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker’s hypertensive newspaper editor in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man films, but after the character was rebooted with Andrew Garfield in the lead, we never saw the desk-pounding, cigar-chomping J. Jonah Jameson again.
Now, Simmons is moving from Marvel to comics rival DC, playing Batman ally Commissioner James Gordon opposite Ben Affleck’s Caped Crusader in the upcoming Justice League movie, sources close to the production confirm. (The Hollywood Reporter first broke the news.)
The Zack Snyder film starts shooting in April, and it will pick up after the events of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which hits theaters on March 25.
In this new iteration of the DC universe, Batman has been at work for many years in Gotham City, which means he and Gordon would begin Justice League with a deep, and often traumatic history already in place. But a future Dark Knight film, which Affleck is considering directing, may visit the early years of the character.
Although Spider-Man is now in the past for Simmons, there is a lot of Batman in the future.
