The other day (actually it was around 0130hrs) I posted Like Any Other Day..? Now the
question I have is how many of you reading that managed to imagine a full story from it? If you did manage to make up your own story then write it! Draw it if you can.
The one good exercise if you are a creative writer is to turn the most ridiculous thing into a story. "That blade of grass just moved!" was the response I got from one person I asked to suggest something I could build a story from. Incidentally, I did and it involved ...a lot (I am not giving out story ideas here!).
"A man's shoe is found on a deserted street"
"A man walked past with half a moustache"
"There's an octopus under that woman's floppy hat" (I wish I could say the person had been drinking....
"There is a blank sheet of paper on your doorstep"
It all sounds silly but if you can get a story out of any of those you may need to think about writing. Books, comics whatever but never give up looking at what is going on around you and seeing something that may spark an idea.
One evening, after getting back to Bristol bus station following a visit to Fleetway and Marvel UK in London, it was around 9.30pm so getting dark, I thought I was hallucinating. Heading my way was someone who must have been at least 6 feet tall without the wig that went with the full Madame Pompadour costume. It was a man with a "Mexican style" moustache. As it turns out I was not hallucinating -it was someone collecting for charity but several scenes played out in my mind (stop it -nothing dirty!!).
On another occasion (a foggy day) I was walking in a fairly deserted lane when a figure appeared walking towards me. He looked pale, dark around the eyes but was dressed in a black druid like robe and his hair was spiked up and electric blue in colour. "Morning" I said. "S'up!" was the response. HE became a character in my comics. The circumstances surrounding a white rabbit some 6ft tall without counting the ears that walked past me I( will not go into. Better still I once left a building to have a full blown ancient Egyptian looking mummy walk past.
Use things you see or that happen to you and develop them into a story -serious or comical it does not matter but have fun with it.
