The Mad Mullah, The Hidden Man, The Lost Kid, The Tall Bloke and the Handsome Artist.

There I was, continuing to sort through my archive boxes when I was staring at a photograph, off-white paper, in issue 13, January, 1990 of Comics F/X: The Comic Fandom Examiner. There were a number of articles on the UK Small Press and comics as I had been pushing them heavily in the United States.  It may be why this was "The UK Invasion" issue!

The photograph was in bad shape which is not surprising considering the newsprint paper. The photo itself was never returned by Comics F/X, but then a lot of things weren't. The caption reads: "L-R: Terry Hooper, Mad Mike, Ben Dilworth and John Erasmus.  It was taken during 1988 or 1989 at a Westminster (London) Comic Mart.  Hidden behind me is a man with a Maggie Thatcher hairstyle clutching (we believe) a photo of said hag, is Darron Northall.

At the time one of my names -not of my choice,- was "The Mad Mullah"...a name I would prefer not to be called in the current world climate (MI5 please note).

Fun times.

A Chap Always wears his Testicles On His Head and His Spectacles In His Pants..or...vice versa?

Hmm. A certain person noted (in a rather un-British fashion) that my last blog photo had me wearing my spectacles on my head.

A chap simply does NOT comment on that type of thing.

I point no finger at Mr Stransky.  that would be churlish.

So, let's see if the bleary-eyed one spots WHAT is in the background of this photo and its something from 1989.

Me, October Events And 1980s/1990s Zines To Be Sold

I will be visiting the Bristol AniMangaPop! event on 4th October but it looks like I may be committed to a table at the Bristol Comics and Zine Fair on the same day so, although someone might look after my books at one event the cost of two tables is a little too much....sadly!

What I will be doing at the Zine event is presenting some Black Tower books as well as rare 1980s-early 1990s small press comics. After the event I will be listing the zines I have left so that anyone in the UK -sorry but UK postage is very expensive and restrictive so selling to people outside the UK would be out- interested can buy copies.

Of course, zines in those days were done craftily on the office copier while the boss was out, via the local library copier or very cheap back-street printers.  Quality, even brand new, was never anything we expected to be too high! It was a whole different seat-of-your-pants little industry back then.

So, once the event is over I'll pop a quick list of "for sale" items on CBO and then work out the postage if anyone wants to buy -via PayPal: Sorry but I got ripped off so many times in the past at least with PayPal the payment is guaranteed!

MTV announces new DC Comics series DEATHSTROKE!

Clark Bull

MTV just announced that fan-favorite villain Deathstroke will arrive on comic book shelves this October in the new ongoing comic book series DEATHSTROKE!

The deadliest mercenary in the DC Universe, a.k.a. Slade Wilson (as seen on the CW TV series Arrow) stars in his own new monthly series written and drawn by Tony S. Daniel (SUPERMAN/WONDER WOMAN, DETECTIVE COMICS).

See Deathstroke as never before in this exciting new series, with one surprise after another as we see Slade Wilson in the fight of his life! He is, without question, the world’s greatest assassin and one of the most feared people on the planet—he’s been a mercenary-for-hire after his involvement in Team 7, has been recruited onto Task Force X, a.k.a The Suicide Squad—now we'll get to know more about the complex man behind the missions.

Daniel will tackle both writing and illustrating the monthly series, and will be joined on art by Sandu Florea (SUICIDE SQUAD).  Daniel told MTV, "When I write, the scenes are playing out visually for me, so it is an advantage that I enjoy and I think will come in handy in this series because it will be very explosive and action packed."

Head on over to MTV to read the rest of the interview with Daniel, and get a first look at a new DC Collectibles Deathstroke bust!

Or....

New52_Deathstroke_Bust
The 6″ tall figure features a custom base, and is made of resin. It’s the first bust of Deathstroke in his DC Comics – New 52 costume, designed by Jim Lee, sculpted by Joe Menna and painted by Jason Wires. Price is TBD, but you’ll be able to pick this literal bad boy up in January, 2015.

And Thus Wrote The Trembling Stroking Hand...

...And I Am NOT Being Dirty!

Outside of the three top postings on CBO -the Chinese language ones- Casterman BD and Cinebook The 9th Art reviews are in the top ten postings daily.  Of course, my own  incredibly fantastic postings are de rigueur (that's "a must" if you need to be told).

I sit back and sometimes wonder just what you, the little people out there, would do without my incredible insights.  I then usually wake up and find I've dribbled onto my t-shirt.

But I need to write this every-so-often because, even if there are only a couple of people who comment regularly*, I do appreciate the fact that you all visit CBO regularly. So THANK YOU!

*I am referring, of course, to the internationally renowned Magnificent Stroking Hand of Stransky. The wonderfully winsome Subzero from Tales From The Kryptonian blog  and the Master of the Electra Glide in Blue, Kid Robson -from the great Crivens! blog.....okay, it started out semi-okay but I'd peaked too early by the time I'd got to Kid R....ah. Oh -The Thunderously Tome Turning Thumb of Kid R!  Yeah. Pity I just didn't re-write this and make it seem more spontaneous.

If anyone knows my care nurse could you tell her I've run out of the pink and green capsules and that someone appears to have wet my pants? Thank you.

Clallam Bay Comic Con -It's Almost THAT Time!

The third annual Clallam Bay Comicon on the way 13th-14th July

Sticker art - only a dollar - and
panel moderators and table bosses get one for free!
You don't HAVE to buy one, but it proves you
attended. We still got 2012-13 tshirts, too.

The third annual Clallam Bay Comicon will take place July 13-14 in the Lion's Club building in Clallam Bay, featuring artists, discussion panels, music and more. Once again, there will be no admission fee, and sales table rates are kept very low. All creatives are welcome to show. The unusual schedule (Sunday-Monday) allows comic shops to attend.

The show organizer, Donna Barr, says this may be the last year for the show, but she only put it on to prove she could do it.
"If I can do it 'way out here, anybody can do it. The largest nearby town, Port Angeles, has many facilities - space and hotel accommodations, eateries, excellent inexpensive bus service, local attractions and accessible wilderness - that would make a comicon a success, and once a town has a comicon, the opportunities for all businesses just grow. The whole entertainment industry and trees - can you beat it?"

For full information on attending the show, or to see how to an admission-free comicon, follow the links at http://www.donnabarr.com

I'd Like To Jump To 1963 And Write A Super Hero Epic....

Quite obviously I am never ever going to be writing a massive saga for Archie Comics featuring The Mighty Crusaders.

Equally obvious is the fact that I am never going to be writing a wondrous epic featuring the old Seaboard Atlas Comics characters.

There are a very few characters I would like to write scripts for that belong to other companies -some companies no longer around. But "Dan99" asked "What characters outside of your own would you like to write a series for?"

Didn't take long to answer that: the characters from Image Comics 1963 series -Mystery Incorporated, The Fury, The Hypernaut, U.S.A., N-Man, Johnny Beyond and Horus. And just in case you did not know (jeez there are a lot of youngsters out there!)....

1963 was a six-issues series from Image Comics and published in 1993. It was written by Alan Moore and with some of his old collaborators on art chores such as Steve Bissette, John Totleben and Rick Veitch. Other artists included some guy named Dave Gibbons as well as Jim Valentino and Don Simpson.  The whole series was an homage to the US Silver Ages of comics and, it has to be said, Marvel Comics in particular. A great blend of sci fi, fantasy, supernatural and downright regular super heroics.

The series began with Mystery Incorporated with reference to 'previous' issues to give it the feel of an established series.  If you don't get it, MI are, basically, the Fantastic Four!

Then there was No One Escapes The Fury with The Fury a rather like a Daredevil-Spiderman cross with the S.H.I.E.L.D.-like L.A.S.E.R. (Law And Security Enforcement Reserve).

Then, we had Tales Of The Uncanny with the VERY weird Hypernaut and his two-faced (literally) alien chimp companion and the USA -Ultimate Special Agent who was a cross between Captain America and the Shield.

Tales From The Beyond featured hep-cat Johnny Beyond, a kind of beatnik Dr Strange and, of course, N-Man who, despite being a big red power-house was the 1963 version of The Incredible Hulk (yeah, well before the Marvel group got a red hulk!).

Oh, and then came Horus Lord Of Light who was the 1963 version of...Thor!

The whole series finished off with book 6 which featured all the characters in The Tomorrow Syndicate: From Here To Alternity!

The later League of Extraordinary Gentlemen parodied old magazine advertisements and the 1963 series did like-wise and if you read comics in the 1960s you might get some of the jokes!

But Book Six was not the actual end of the series.  There was supposed to be an 80 page giant drawn by Jim Lee and in this the 1963 characters were to be sent some thirty years into "the future" where they were to meet up with the contemporary 1993 characters published by Image Comics. "Moore intended to make a commentary on how the air of "realism" brought to Marvel Comics in the early 1960s had paved the way for the "mature" and "grim and gritty"American comics of the 1990s."

Now, Moore claims to be solely responsible for this mature, gritty and grim trend while at the same time falsely accusing Stan Lee of claiming to have created everything by himself.  He seems to forget that Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns appeared at the same time and was just as influential in creating this "new take".  Now, Moore seems to be stuck in a groove on this brighter, 1960s comics turning nastier shtick. In #2 of Anything Goes December 1986), appeared Moore's story that has that same theme running through it in a story titled Pictopia -drawn by Donald Simpson.

The facts are that Moore had a falling out with Jim Lee over the selling of Wildstorm Studios to DC Comics as Wildstorm owned Moore's Americas Best Comic line. In fact, Moore seems to have had a falling out with a number of people including Bissette.

So the 80 pager never appeared and Moore simply kept rechurning that bright comic characters to dark comic characters idea. But - but- he did still write some cracking stories including the Tom Strong series for a while.

But I do love those characters and...hey, I guess I'll never get a chance to write the 1963 characters into a great (ego) story.

A theme is developing.

It Was DEFINITELY An "OMG!" Moment -And No Naked Women Were Involved!

Whoa. You know when they just slowly say out loud "Oh....My....God!" ? Well so did I. Now it's not a question of why someone who believes in no god(s) would say this.  No. Its what I found -this!

Now, having being treated as less than nothing by the current organisers of the Bristol Expo (which is why I no longer support nor advertise that dying event) I think I wrote in a post that I had been publicising the event since 2003/2004?

Well, I was going through an archive box full of Small Press stuff that I hope to start selling this year, and I thought "That's not a zine!" Turned it over and found the Comics 99 booklet plus a couple of ads I had run in the printed Comic Bits. Do you know I can't remember much about the event.  But, yes, I was publicising the successor to the UK Comic Art Convention well before I remembered doing so!

So, I was -was- a supporter of the event for 15 years which makes the new organisers' and their insulting behaviour/rudeness even worse.

1999 -2014....WHERE did all those years go??!!

When Titans Clash!! Actually, I'm just writing about two comic events on the same day in the same city.

When To Simply Walk Away -Email cons aimed at blogs

Right. I had an enquiry two weeks ago about adding a paid for link to CBO.  I wrote back and asked what the link was for and how much they were offering and pointed out what this site deals with.

I got an email back that they wanted to pay for an add that tied in with my site.

I wrote back stating that I was not going to just add a link to my site blindly so needed to know what they wanted to advertise and how much they were offering.

I got a reply "not to worry" and that it fitted in with my site.

AGAIN -what did they want to add and what were they offering to pay.?

Told again not to worry and under this were around twenty (20) url links. Yeah, like I'm going to click on links from an unidentified 'company' and twenty? Feck off.

So, I thought on last go. Simple questions: company name?   what did they want to advertise?  How much were they offering?

Nothing.

Days later "Did you get my email about advertising on your site?"

I wrote back that I was not going to respond to any other emails and that they would now be reported as junk UNLESS I got answers to the questions I asked.

Two hours later: "Did you get my email -I am waiting for a reply!"  Oh, and a phone number to contact.  Then...

"Diana Alfie
To Me

We want to post our article at your site with our one or two links. For this we will pay you.

Let me about your decision."
And:
" HI,

waiting for your reply..........???"

ALL female names on these emails and let me tell you that this is NOT legitimate.  A company will come to you with the advert and offer a certain amount and await your reply.  If after two weeks you've had nothing more than dumb-ass replies its a con.

Walk away.

You can add it to those countless women who email you and have all -INCREDIBLY- had exactly the same lives....you know what I mean?  This:
