"Shazam! Sorry? Who The **** Is, What -'see see beck'???"

This piece by Andrew Meola over at MStars News is interesting.

Last month, Warner Bros. and DC Comics announced its full movie slate through 2020. Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's movie Shazam was on the list for a 2019 release, but is it possible the movie could be independent of this burgeoning DC Cinematic Universe?

Recall that in September, New Line President Toby Emmerich commented on the tone of the movie and hinted it could be a standalone movie. "It feels to me like Shazam will have a tone unto itself," he said. "It's a DC comic, but it's not a Justice League character, and it's not a Marvel comic. The tone and the feeling of the movie will be different from the other range of comic book movies."

Now, The Rock has further hinted that Shazam could be standalone. A Twitter user offered his opinion that, "unfortunately, with [David S.] Goyer and [Zack] Snyder in charge, DC will never make anything nearly as fun as the Fast [and the Furious] movies."

The Rock replied, "I guaran-damn-tee we're gonna have bad ass fun w/ Black Adam. (Its a NL/DC property). #Independence See u at the junket homie."

Here's what The Rock told Comic Book Resources about the role back in March, when he had yet to publicly reveal the character's identity.

"The first quality we were looking for was that he had to be extremely complex and have a lot going on. What that does for me as an actor and the studio is it gives us space that we can explore; his complexities. The other quality was that he had to - the character we were looking for had to be well-known but never brought to life. Then what that does again as an actor, it gives me a little bit of space, and we talked about personality. It just gives me a chance to put an imprint into his personality, with the set of tools that I could bring to the table and put a very unique twist on his personality, but still pay homage to who he is. The third thing - and most important - is he had to be a badass mother*cker, OK, and on a Superman level of power, where [he] could throw down. In those three qualities, I'm happy we've found that character."

What do you think of Shazam and The Rock's remarks? Let us know in the comments section.

Firstly, above all the movie hype from Hollywood and comics companies, I hope that there will be a big interest shown in the creator of Captain Marvel -Charles Clarence Beck: often referred to as "CC" or "C. C. Beck".

You need to understand that the Fawcett Comics Captain Marvel, Marvel Family comics were huge sellers.  In 1939, the young Beck, who favoured a more "cartoony" over "realistic" style for the character, was asked to designed Bill Parker's character "Captain Thunder" but, just before Whiz Comics #1 appeared, the characters name was changed to....Captain Marvel!

Remember: there was NO Marvel Comics at this time -Timely/Atlas only became Marvel Comics in the 1960s so no threat to sue over the name.  In the UK Mick Anglo reprinted these strips until Fawcett gave in to National (DC) heavy handed legal action -"He's a copy of Superman!" and then he created Marvel Man whose name Quality (under Dez Skinn) was changed to Miracle Man to avoid legal action....which WOULD have been thrown out of court because all that had to be done was for Quality -later Eclipse Comics continued publishing the series- to produce a 1950s Marvel Man and quote print history which began in 1954 (735 issues?) up until 1960 and Timely only evolved into Marvel in the 1960s.  Precedent under law.

But blah blah blah

 Above: C. C. Beck in 1982.

Below: The "only" Captain Marvel/Shazam most current fans recognise.  Alex Ross' image of the good Captain.

Note that Captain Marvel met Superman on a number of adventures -after DC purchased the character!  They also met up in the great All Star Squadron series written by Roy Thomas until Crisis On Infinite Earths really screwed things up!

That writ, DC hasn't done badly in screwing things up since then so....

There was a lot of humour in those adventures as well as a lot of bondage and sadomasochism. You think I'm joking? I have a few of the hundred pagers from the 1970s and lots of tying up, spanking and even -which had Ben Dilworth in hysterical laughter when he saw it back in the 1980s- one old dear having a spanking with a steam iron.  All unintentionally BDSM of course.  I don't even know what BDSM means.

Captain Marvel has appeared in Justice League of America as well as the Justice Society of America.  For some reason, Black Adam, during this 1990s period (I've lost all interest in recent years) became almost a land based Sub-Mariner character.  Rebelling against the outside world as he tried to re-establish his downgraded, third world country back into a major power.  Hey -he even started to look like old Subby (minus winged ankles)!

 Below: Sub-Mariner Black Adam.

But it's all "The Rock" blather blather blather simply because comic fans today seem to have no interest in the creator of the character they read now.  WHY? Are comic fans today so stuck up their own anal retentive minds that they don't care?

DC if it has even an ounce of self respect left (I think its in the box in the janitors closet) should make fans aware of just who created the character and I hope, as with the Superman and Batman film franchises, there will be a "Created by C. C. Beck" prominent on the screen.

There is a wikipedia entry on Beck, so you don't have to strain and look for something in print, here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C._C._Beck#Later_work

Am I ranting?  It's not a Sunday so surely not?

I just find it detestable that comic fans will rave over some of the awful artists around today -hey, George Perez gets a lot of hype and why not and I am not referring to him more to the "I do it all on digital media" lack-of-talents.  Writers -now let's remember they are all prima donnas and all think they are the greatest writers since Shakespeare ("Hey -I'm bedder than that guy -I'm still alive!").

Beck, and creators like him, remembered in such publications as Alter Ego, created the industry that is now worth so much and spawning movies and TV series, through poor pay and very -VERY- long hours of work.

'Shazam'/Captain Marvel was created by C. C. Beck. People watch the TV series and movies featuring the Avengers and Agents of SHIELD and do you know what? They do not even read the "based on characters created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby"!!  Seriously.  So do they give a winged flying shit that C. C. Beck created Captain Marvel, Black Adam, Mary Marvel. etc.? No.

So, just to m,ake sure you realise: C. C. Beck created Captain Marvel and if you don't care then **** you.

REMEMBER THE COMIC CREATORS
