Robotech, Siege Ratchet, Beast Kingdom, 1000Toys and More! - Dan in the ...
6th attempt to post....
Everyone seems to get boxes of toys or figures to review but me! Bwaaaaah!! It is soooo unfair.
Off to have a tantrum!
Sarjari #106
Sarjari #106
US comic size
B&w
40pp
5 Euros
Sadly, Pekka A. Manninen who publishes this is not online. Sensibly he ignores the internet. That said you might find copies in an online search from other sellers.
Again, this is in Finnish and each issue tends to have a theme -this issue it is dragons. For 106 issues now this has been THE publication to see Finnish comic creators with styles varying from high quality to amateur and in 20 or so (I'm old and I do have copies from the 1980s) years the comic has never failed to entertain me and though I have tried to learn Finnish...I gave up.
Home publication of Kapteeni Kuolio (Captain Gangrene) -the origin of whom Manninen related in the old CBO interview (reprinted in The Hooper Interviews). I did mention Manninnen's other work in a post a while ago now:
http://hoopercomicart.blogspot.com/2013/07/lempo-kustannus-pekka-manninen.html
Sadly my camera (no scanner) does not do the pages justice but it would be nice to see real comic lovers getting hold of copies of this gem.

A speculative fiction comic book.
Comic book on speculative fiction. Authors: P. Blanco & K. Rosé, Ilpo Koskela, Vesa Vitikainen & Tomi Sunnarborg, Mikael Mäkinen, PA Manninen, Sippo Mentunen, Ninni
Aalto.
The Finnish version of Heavy Metal -titled here (amusingly) Light Metal. This was sent to me by Pekka Manninen in Finland and it really is nice to see home home-grown creators at work here. Manninen has been highlighting Finnish creators in his own Sarjari for more than twenty years.
Incidentally, the last strip is by Manninen and coloured using mainly water colours (sorry about quality -no scanner and crap camera).
You should never let a fear of a foreign language stop you from getting a comic. The art does most of the work and you may discover some real treats. I liked the look of Kaukopartio and you can get the humour involved.
I have included a link to the store front in case anyone wants to buy a copy -at 8 Euros it isn't bad.

Just do not be fooled Update
Does anyone else laugh at all the Marvel movie 'scoops' on You Tube channels?
In the last week I have heard so many 'scoops' about Spider-man 3 -all from "trusted insider sources" -worth pointing out that these people all add"This was from a private conversation before pre-production" which means "I can make up shit and when its proven untrue I can say they changed it when they went into production. I'm covered."
Tiny postage stamp size images that "prove that Agatha Harkness is to play a pivotal role in Wanda Vision"...if you have photographic proof then show images people can see because otherwise I call BS.
The Illuminati are being introduced into the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) at the end of the next Dr Strange movie. Says who? Well a good and reputable source who reported that Spider-Man was to appear in the MCU in Civil War while Sony and Marvel said they had not even discussed the character. I hate to point this out but I bear that incredible source with the same news one year earlier.
Oh, after one exclusive 'scoop' on what Spider-Man 3 was really going to be about -Spider-man and Deadpool- another scoop revealed what the movie was going to be about. Oh, and did I mention the insider scoop that Deadpool was an Avenger in the next upcoming Avenger movie...or that he was in the MCU introduced X-Men movies....or....you get my point?
No doubt there will be 2-3 more insider scoops this coming week.
One thing I noticed is that some of these You Tube channels all have win an X Box competitions and have some form of sponsorship. Others I realised very quickly were all using click bait titles and then broke the scoop....followed by "remember this is what we are guessing is going to happen" -in other words it's all a fake to get your views and for what purpose I leave open to you (well, having visited the click bait video your profile and info is open for use).
I have a quite sad life so I check things and guess what? Most of the 'scoops' and 'exclusives' were dismissed as incorrect, untrue gossip long before some of the videos were made -and it took me a few minutes to learn that.
Now, I am not saying that these channels are being used as Marvel mouthpieces to keep publicity about new movies going and attract more fan attention but they prominently quote Marvel movie boss Kevin Feige and if you look at this as a whole you clearly see these are not really independent video makers, just like Bleeding Cool and other blogs are not independent. They are promoting Marvel movies and if you go further back and watch their videos they got almost every movie wrong BUT helped promote them.
I hate to write it but "fake news".
If you watch the videos just as fun then no problem but if you watch them to get facts....you are being played.
the only thing that I can reveal having spoken to an insider is that I am scripting the next Avengers movie...another exclusive -The Defenders will guest star...hmm. Strong smell of dung around here :-)
Just do not be fooled
UPDATE
Well the latest exclusive scoops is that in the Dr Strange movie Prince Namor The Sub-Mariner will appear. Maybe, Could do. Kevin Feige said something about a character being introduced. The Rock (Dwayne Johnson) will be playing Namor...even if he's signed up to be Black Adam. He very well might be. Seems likely. He isnt, Take your pick.
See, I got it right...and there are those X Box prizes.
People cannot bve so stup[id to take this serious;ly. Can they?

Do You Download or Upload Comics Illegally?
I was sent a link today to a site with illegal downloads of the books I produced for Fantagraphics/Eros with artists Art Wetherell and David Gordon.
In the space of a year one book was downloaded 34,831 times. That is 34,831 thefts of copyright and money from us as creators. Read and liked it? Did they buy copies? No.
Including just one other book downloaded with 60,881...that's 95,712 thefts.
To put that in perspective my percentage from these were they sales would be £478,560 and that is from just ONE site. Others exist and it must be remembered that these are sites run by criminals accepting copyright theft -they KNOW what they are doing as do the thieves downloading.
As I've just had a can of cold Heinz spaghetti for my main meal you can see why even 5% of that £478,560 would be welcome.
THIS IS WHY I ACCEPT NO EXCUSES FROM PEOPLE WHO ILLEGALLY UPLOAD BOOKS OR THOSE WHO DOWNLOAD THEM. YOU ARE THIEVES

Yes, still here!
Just having my dinner of a bowl of Scott's Porage Oats (not kidding) while promoting my books online and ...WHOOMPF! Laptop goes.
Seems to have taken quite a few files with it -but not major ones. Got it working again so this is to see if it works.
Kind of shoots the selling online in the feet.
Why I do not simply quit and walk away I do not know.

Comic Events, Boxes of Comics and Dreams!
As I did not get to sleep until about 05:00 hrs (No, I was not celebrating New Year just like I was not celebrating Christmas) I was looking at the possible uses of GIFs in posts -pages of art being used in this way. Perhaps even non review art.
It was then that reality kicked in. The GIFs used in that test post were actually created by Google when it used to show illoes from posts that had hit high viewing numbers on the old Google Plus-I think the Return of the Gods GIF was for 1 million views. So those three -there is another Google made for a Stransky and Labbatt post- were made by Google so were saved online. GIFs I had made and not saved are lost, however, I discovered that this old laptop I use (I really am shocked that it is still semi functioning!) would not let me make GIFs.
Tried everything but it seems the system just will not allow it -rather like it not allowing me to open video editing programs.
It is something I'd like to try in the future but there are a LOT of "ifs" and "buts" there. My main priority is to try to make some money by selling books and to be honest the thought of another year of no sales is depressing, Still, I have my health....oh.
There was the idea of selling books direct to people but in the UK only (postal charges for outside the UK are way too high) especially the comics not on the online store. However, if people are not ordering from the online store with all its postal options and protection are they going to buy from me with straight forward 1st Class mail only?
Above: some of the BTC&B stock boxes
I have four boxes full of stock mostly ordered for the con International Book and Comic Fair and if you have never heard about that: http://hoopercomicart.blogspot.com/2018/07/comic-events-let-this-serve-as-warning.html "con" meant "con".
Bristol no longer has comic events, just occasional small press events that no one tells me about and at which I was always told my books looked "too professional"!! Bath -same thing. But you have to remember that these people use "Comic and Zine Fair" as a title but have absolutely no comic book exhibitors and most claim to not know what a comic is. :-/
If I go ahead with UK only selling of books it will get announced here, of course,
But it does look like a grim year ahead and possibility of getting over to Germany is fading into the distance quickly.
Depressed now? :-)
