Collecting Marvel Masterpieces Avengers

Before I fade into....somewhere...THIS is why buying these books to complete my Avengers run is NOT an option.

These are criminal prices and this is WHY comic fans are dying out.  Criminal prices

 The first two I purchased for £5.00 and £8.00 earlier in 2015.  Maybe I ought to sell because, apparently, there are NO COMIC DEALERS in the UK.

Now I'm going.

    Yes, some of the prices are ridiculous especially for those MARVEL MASTERWORKS books. The trades should not cost more than 25 bucks. Usually I don´t bother with these because if I buy some collections of old comics I prefer the hardbacks. But if I desperately need one and the price at amazon is too high ( they are sometimes in the bargain books section ) there are still comic shops in Germany where you can get them at cover price. So I guess that´s better than in the UK.

    The hardcovers are more expensive. I mean there you have a regular cover price of 50 bucks for the old ones and 70 bucks for the new ones. That´s a lot of money so I only have two for which I paid full price. There is a third one I need but so far I haven´t found it any where and at amazon they want 222 EUROS for it. I have no idea how they came up with that number or why this volume is so particularly expensive.

    I have three more hardcovers, one I bought at half price in the bargain book section and the other at 25 bucks form the new and used section. Which can be kind of risky because you never know what other people define as in good condition. Usually I look in the description if it´s still in the original shrink wrap. Not that it´s a guarantee but your chances are better.

    I did a quick look at amazon and so far I found :

    UNCANNY X - MEN 2 hardcover 35 EUROS + 3 for shipping, still shrink wrapped

    DEFENDERS 4 hardcover 38 EUROS + 3 for shipping, good condition

    AVENGERS 11 hardcover 44 EUROS + 3 for shipping, new

    FANTASTIC FOUR 6 hardcover 22 EUROS + 3 for shipping, used almost new

    FANTASTIC FOUR 15 hardcover 43 EUROS + 3 for shipping, new

    SUB MARINER 4 hardcover 45 EUROS + 3 for shipping, new

    The question is if one wants to risk getting a book that´s damaged. I was thinking about the Defenders one because I always wanted to read the series and the prices are only going to go up.

    But you are right, some of these books, especially AVENGERS or anything else from the movies are going for crazy prices. The only option is to find some other collection where the issues one is looking for are re - printed or wait for some bargain offers. I just got three new Epic Collections but only because they were cheaper than at amazon and I could cash in a 15 percent off coupon.

    I don´t know who comic dealers expect to sell these books to if they demand such high prices but I know that these are the same guys who complain that not enough people buy comics and those that do don´t buy enough books. Well, maybe it would help if people could AFFORD to buy a lot of comic books. I know that 90 percent of what I put in my new bookshelf was bought at 30 percent off or bigger bargains. Because nobody can afford the real prices of comics nowadays. You want to get a heart attack ? Just look what Marvel is selling those Adamantium collections for.

    I know someone publishing a UFO encyclopaedia series. His books are bulky (last one was 400pp and colour photos, etc. £21.00 (23Euro?). There are copies sold by others for £2999 which is 4,064.12 EUR!!!! He asked me how the hell someone thinks anyone would pay that for a new £21 book -and if there is a moron will buy it. Just simply con men. MARVEL MASTERWORKS paperbacks are just as pricey. I have the whole silver age (1960s) Sub Mariner series (#1 I bought Tales To Astonish reprint because of the criminal prices) and it never cost me 45 Euro. Defenders is a great comic and had nice Sal Buscema art...of course, I have the Sub-Mariner first Defenders story which is great. I check for any bargains but UK...nah. Everyone thinks they can ask stupid prices and they aren't selling!

    It looks like the only alternative to the MASTERWORKS is to get THE CELESTIAL MADONNA, THE SERPENT CROWN, THE COMING OF THE BEAST and THE PRIVATE WAR OF DOCTOR DOOM. These were released in trade and hardcover although I´m not so sure with CELESTIAL MADONNA. I´ve looked on amazon.uk and some of them are available although prices may vary. I know COMING OF THE BEAST is available for 13 bucks on amazon.de ..... if I had know that I would have sent you a copy. By the way, has my parcel arrived yet ?
