Along with his old friend Maxime, Valentin Choupeau, an expert cake-maker, created one the most profitable bakeries in the region. But when Maxime, gifted the business, decides to leave for the U.S., it’s a catastrophe. How to successfully run his business alone, while his wife and children already complain that they do not see enough of him? Through an old book of spells found in the bric-àbrac of Uncle Isaac, which he recently inherited, Valentin tries anything but settles on fashioning a golem in his image and give it life, in order for it to take over his baking duties!
And it works and Valentine can finally let go … Unfortunately, his ‘twin’ decides that it wants a life outside of baking and looks to take over Valentine’s life!
The artwork is wonderful. The faces and body movements are masterly while the architecture and scenery are as detailed as one expects from these French BD creators and, yes, I know Eun-Kyung Park is originally from South Korea! I loved the little homage to Paul Wegener and Henrik Galeen’s 1915 film, Der Golem (I think in the US it was re-titled The Monster Of Fate?). The use of colouring again applied superbly to set scenes.
I guess the lesson is always be happy with what you’ve got!
