No more secrets! This anthology opens the door to the vital and colorful, but very well hidden, female comics scene from Poland. 20 young comics authors tell gripping stories about their lives-childhood, adolescence as well as their current daily struggles and joys, about their fears, desires and dreams. While discovering this vibrant group of artists, you will also get a glimpse into the Polish life. The comics capture the multifaceted relationships to friends, men and very often to their dearly loved grandmothers, who might now also tell you some valuable life lessons.

The book you are holding in your hands is the first ever anthology of Polish women’s autobiographical comics. At the same time, it is also a fairly good overview of the main trends in this genre. As a result, the works inside represent a somewhat narcissistic form of graphomania (unavoidable when artists are allowed to talk about themselves). It also features underground anarcho-feminist comics, reminiscent of the works in the Wimmin’s Comix anthologies. It includes redrawn photos, documents and formal experiments that lend credence to the stories told. And there are some real gems in it, such as the work of Agata Wawryniuk and Olga Wróbel.

Did You Just Hear Something…..?

You Can Ask Me Anything For £100 Or Just Feck Off!

Last year I helped some twelve people working on dissertations pertaining to comics for university degree work. I helped no fewer than 15 researching old British comics/writing books on the medium. All of this involved a lot of work on my part and what have the thanks been? Nothing. Not a mention. All ‘original research’ on their parts.
if you are involved in this type of work and thinking of asking me for the bulk of your research -DO NOT. Get off your asses and work for it.
I will no longer be acting as a consultant to people setting up a comic company -not that they are real “companies”. You might think that if they plan to do this they have a “plan”? No. Last year I had ten such people and it was almost as though the same person had written the email:
1. “What type of comic/genre is selling best?”
2. “What format is selling best”
3. “What sort of book should I publish first?”
4. “Which artists that are good and liable to sell (their work) best that work for free?”
5. “What sort of publishing plan do I need?”

Now, if you have not sorted out these basic questions then you are NOT a “new publisher looking at the market” or a publisher of any kind. They are all asking the same thing: what is guaranteed to make me a lot of money fast without thinking about the artist and what do I do then?
They may as well sign their, uh, ‘companies’ over to me.
This is a yearly thing and recently, because of films such as Avengers Assemble these morons think you can pick a genre that will sell, make you lots of money and then its the movie deal.
95% of these people just vanish -especially when you point out that IF a book DID make money you would HAVE to pay the artist something.
Then we have the artists and writers who all want the info on who to talk to to get that book deal straightaway. Some cannot write a script. Some -in fact about 96% of artists ask which company is more likely to like their art and who to approach…without even showing me so much as a panel of artwork!
For all of those mentioned above (I know there are more out there) I need to make this clear: I now have a flat consultation fee of £100. You want me to do your work you pay me -ask a pro consultation firm and you’ll be lucky to pay less than £500.
Seriously, ingratitude and being messed about has made me harden my stance. you do not want to pay the fee then do not write to me just feck off. I need to eat and pay bills.
NO ONE gets favours any more.
This is not a right.
CBO is NOT a democracy for morons.

Cinebook The 9th Art: XIII -Maximillian’s God

XIII – Maximilian’s Gold

Vance & Van Hamme
Full colour
48 colour pages
Size: 18.4 x 25.7 cm
Age: 15 years and up
ISBN: 9781849181398
Price: £5.99 inc. VAT
Publication: November 2012
XIII and his friends, still in hiding from the NSA, now have the riddle from all three silver watches… and Maximilian’s gold is within their reach. But the treasure is well hidden. Not to mention that $15 million is enough to attract a lot of unwanted attention.
Meanwhile, in Washington, an increasingly desperate Frank Giordino can feel the noose tightening around his neck—and men are at their most dangerous when desperate. All he needs is someone to bring him the right information…
Once again I find myself not having realised how many volumes of XIII have so far been released by Cinebook -this is the 16th!!!

And, really, I have run out of things to write about XIII. There is some bloody action and the usual plot twisting and intrigue and the art is just…superb. I love the scenery toward the end of the book –lovely desert mountainscape.
Just buy the series!!!

Water Closet Press: Ladies And Gentlemen #1 & 2

All art from Ladies & Gentlemen #1

Ladies and Gentlemen #1
The Water Closet Press
Writer: Richard Worth
Artist: Jordan Collver
Black & white
US Comic size
22pp
£3.00
Buy it from Travelling Man, OK Comic, Excelsior or at www.waterclosetpress.blogspot.com
According to Richard Worth:
“Ladies and Gentlemen is a comic packed with adventure, mystery, romance, moustaches and monocles. It follows the adventure of The Gentry, a team of Victorian crime fighters. It’s a love letter to Silver Age comics, magicians and myths.”
“The Curse Of The Were-Hyena” -The story is okay and the artwork looks rather “busy” with a lot of detail and some very nicely drawn architecture.
It’s the sort of comic I’d normally have picked up on my trips to comic shops when they had mixed boxes of back issues and I was looking for interesting independent comics. I like the fact that someone other than me is aware of the legends of were-hyaenas!
Check out the Water Closet Press website and if you see them at any events –buy a copy!

Ladies & Gentlemen #2
Black & White
US Size
24 pages
£3.50
Order as above

The story of the were-hyena continues and new threats emerge. The art here is far less “busy” and detailed as in the first issue and is a lot cleaner. Not surprising really since, if you want to keep to a deadline you do need to compromise to a degree,

This could develop into a good series so it’ll be nice to see how the art develops –nothing wrong with the art in this issue but I do love me some “busy” detailed art!

When this arrived I was a little “meh!” I just wasn’t holding out too much hope since Western comics have been a rarity in the UK for decades now –though Europe has never stopped it’s love of Wild West comics.

Went through the pages quickly and noted a couple of things I didn’t like with certain panels. If I get that reaction I usually put the book down and leave it a day or two. This I did and, yesterday, I sat down and read the book in one sitting. Normally, a book like this I’ll read a bit then get on with work then read some more later. Thing is, this was rather good.

My whole reader feeling was that I had just sat down and watched the old BBC 2 Saturday Western (if any of you are that old you’ll know what I mean). All the elements were there except for the mighty Randolph Scott. There was even the slight twist in the ending.

Not sure if De Gruchy is a Western film fan but it’s the feeling I got. The good thing is that Time Bomb Comics produce these books as one-offs so it’s the entire story –no part 2 to wait for.

Nice cover design adds a lot to this –if you are at Thought Bubble check out their table –and The Last Ride Of Henry Holden!

In Defence Of The Bristol Comic Expo

I am absolutely hacked off!
“What’s new?” you may ask. Well, I have noted before how dealers/traders at the Bristol Comics Expo have moaned on and on to me about the event and how they , herm, ‘never’ make much money.
I have SEEN those same people making a lot of money at their tables and telling people how good the event is…until their cronies are around.
Mike Allwood built up the Bristol Comic Expo into a great two day (yes, we all wish it was Friday-Sunday but…) family friendly event where you can see some great big name guests. The hep-cats at Fallen Angel Media took over last year and though there were a few small problems it was still a great event and they have learnt lessons.
I have heard and even read emails from people involved in Captions, the MCM expoes and another event bad-mouthing the Bristol Expo.
Let me tell you what visitors and traders without two-faces tell me: the Bristol Expo is one they love. The location (no travelling great distances from anywhere -especially if you travel by rail) is great and atmospheric. The locals outside the expo are friendly -friendlier than locals in other cities. For tables the expo is the cheapest event I’ve found in the UK.
If YOUR local event is so much better (you know who are) then WHY keep coming back to Bristol??
And why not complain directly to the organisers rather than snipe and whine but when they come up and ask how it’s going saying “Great. Fine”?
The Bristol International Comic Expo is one I will always support so do not bad mouth it to me in future.

Emma Vieceli Joins Alex rider

According to Emma Vieceli:
It’s official!

I’m excited to announce that next year I’ll be diving into the world of Alex Rider as the artist on the graphic novels. ^_^

Details can be found by clicking the link above. I’m very excited to be working with Antony Johnston on the books, and they are of course adapted by him from Anthony Horowitz’s fantastic novel series. There are already graphic novels of the series out there, and I do urge you to go check them out because they’re really lovely books, but I’ll be jumping in at Scorpia; book five in the series.

I’m thrilled to be joining Walker Books on this series - what a great team I’m getting to work with! ^_^

The Next Art:Hades Syndrom 6: End Spiel/End Game

Hades-Syndrom Teil VI: End Spiel/Part 6: End Game
Writer/Artist: Michael Feldmann
Tomppa (Der Engel) Variant cover limited to 50 copies
The Next Art
US Comic Size
Full colour
36 Seiten
6,00 EUR
ISBN 978-3-939400-44-8
If you’ve not read my previous posting on this series check it out here:
http://www.comicbitsonline.com/2012/04/20/the-nextart-verlag-hades-syndrome/
I’m not going to give much of the story away here. Dodo and Nuke finally get back together after a very violent and bloody showdown with Major Prugelt and his men…but things do not turn out to have a happy ending for the duo.
Set in a post WW III Germany, the book sports a great cover by Feldmann but if you are lucky, and you can find it, there is a variant Tomppa cover limited to just 50 copies.
Feldmann’s artwork has improved over the series and this is a strictly mature reader book with strong violent scenes and nudity/sex. This is very enjoyable and shows that, yes, Germany can produce great comics. Feldmann is one of those new German artists who I think will be around for a VERY long time. You can see more of his work and there is a link to his pin-up art book (a nice pin-up piece is on the back cover of HS#6) here:
http://www.feldmanncomics.de/
But is this it for Dodo and Nuke and the hades-syndrom world? Maybe not. Feldmann points out that this is the end of six years of work for him but that there are questions and scenarios that could see the two anti-heroes return. I have to admit that I would, personally, like to see that.
Okay, Feldmann’s art is not going to have Marvel or DC chasing after him BUT that is a good thing in a way. His art is improving, as it should with any artist, but it works with his characters and his stories and you can see that it was hard work but that the -can I call it “fun”? and energy reaches out to the reader.
You can purchase all six issues from the Next Art Verlag and please do not let it put you off if you do not understand German because Feldmann’s art carries the story through and I’d like to see more people get a hold of this book.
