Having now had to delete several pretty nasty comments aimed at a couple of creators whose books I reviewed, not to mention the constant negativity I'm facing personally from those in comics and the total lack of interest and disdain from event venues toward comics, I have decided that enough is enough.
I have decided that, unless something really bad happens to prevent it, I am going to try at least one big European event in 2016.
Not decided 100% which yet as I have to also consider getting stock to the events and other aspects. Once I've sorted things out I'll make it known.
Update. I've been looking at Erlangen 2016 but their site is NOT the most helpful -it doesn't make it clear WHO is organising the event or who to contact regarding getting a table. meh.

Nasty comments about people who's books you've reviewed ? Who would do that ? I can't remember a single truely bad review you've given. Publish the assh*les names. What possibly can they complain about ? I get my fair share of things thrown at me for just being me. It's depressing, and sometimes it drives me down. But I realize - the problem is mostly THEIRS. So, flick off the bast*rds like the fleas they are, and focus on what you want to do. And what you ARE. Me ? I often just get through the day by knowing what I am. Sod the rest. So, don't give up or be discouraged; keep on looking or the way ahead, and keep on plugging away. It pays off in the end. Well...off to a meeting- gonna get into it tonight ! 'll have fun. Talk to you tomorrowish.
ReplyDeleteGerald Groy -he's been named on CBO home page. There is just too much of this going on and the old comraderie of zines and comics is dead. Those that ARE friendly are too scared of the nasty ones. I think Lee James Turnock will know this moron as its the one I think keeps trolling him. Good luck with the meeting. Sit there. Say nothing. Just keep polishing a breadknife and then smile. Works for me.
ReplyDeleteThe Comic Salong in Erlangen is organist by the " Kulturamt der Stadt Erlangen " if you want to have a table , and have no much money , you can offer them to speak about the english independent szene maybe they make a deal .
ReplyDeleteGood information and advice Mr Sanchez - thank you ( on behalf of Terry ) - as for my meeting: Sparks flew. And not from any polished knife. I may be coming home soon ( but after reflection I doubt it. The bastards never let go; their goal is only control ). On a happier note I had a Guiness ( well 'replica' ) and that went down like a long lost friend massaging my tonsils. I felt I could sing opera ( but refrained because ...well... my voice is... uhummm .... harsh ? ). Alcohol; The unsavoury lubricant of life. Time to go to work. Take it easy.
ReplyDeleteI have no issue with negative comments , if asked for or relevant but I had no idea on the content of some of these nastier ones, only after reading the one you recently published on a Deadpool ( reasonable ) opinion/comment you made its no wonder you're scunnered. I think anyone (especially an adult) driven to make comments like this are very very much at fault and are actually more than a bit sad - Its strange that when comic characters (albeit 90% super heroes) are so popular that events etc have so little interest in comics, the source inspiration its a tough business but Ive got a feeling you'll get there.
ReplyDeleteHi, Paul. I've edited it so you can't tell WHO it was aimed at but the two comments (I deleted one immediately when I saw an obscenity included) go:
ReplyDelete"You make enemies because you are a hateful psychopath with mental issues, mommy issues, and an inability to draw stuff that doesn't slant to the side."
and
Gerald Groy
on 19/08/15
"He's not a success because he's freakin' terrible. Jesus, this swill is the worst!"
And it turns out that, yes, this person has followed the specific creator around and written worse on other sites.
The other comment from someone aimed at another creator basically referred to him having sex with his mother and being illegitimate. In the old fanzine days we would all know the name to watch out for and the letters would be binned. Now its all (they think) internet anonymity and the amount I get on CBO and in my mail is quite high but legal warnings to ISPs usually stop them until they move to another server or even public library in one case and the library got the complaint, found out who used the computer in question and he was banned from all library computers in his county.
Negative comments....well, if it's "I don't really like how he draws people" then fair enough if it's in context but "Why don't you **** off to Europe if you wanna give it to them up the ***!" maybe a "bit" out of context (and I know who sent that!).
It is a very tough business but one meant to entertain and get fans talking. People see these comments and back off sadly.
Sanchez: THANKS. I know English isn't your favourite way to communicate! Erlangen is in May which might be a problem and so I was looking for smaller ones in Germany during June or July. But I'll bear in mind what you write. ;-)
ReplyDeleteStransky -paid deportation: the best way to travel. Guinness....I hear they put koi in it over there :-) Man, you need to get your arse back to the UK. Watch a programme like "Jaywick on Benefits"...uh, no, maybe not. But keep yourself as calm as possible and keep telling them "I know Terry Hooper" and make that sound like a threat! ;-)
ReplyDeleteTerry mate, you have the habit of being honest. Some people just don't like that. Personally I really like your blogs.
ReplyDeleteHi, Ja D....agh! I never know how to take positive comments -they are so rare!! THANKS, it is appreciated.
ReplyDeleteThere is a new comic convention in Stuttgart announced for the 25th and 26th of June 2016.
