Firstly, no, Lucky Luke 77 -A Cowboy In High Cotton was never sent to me so I have no idea why I was asked whether I withdrew the review "due to controversy"...what controversy??

Anyway, that out of the way on with 78 and 79

Once again, Luke is called to the penitentiary, though for once the Daltons haven’t escaped. They have, however, just learned that their cousin Emmett, last survivor of the original Dalton gang, has a son – and that Averell was chosen as his godfather!

Now Lucky Luke has to accompany the dumbest bandits in the West to the young boy’s house, as Averell has been temporarily entrusted with his education. A job that his brothers see as an excellent opportunity to get rich.

Yes. I know what you are thinking; in what world would the Daltons get so many breaks to be allowed to be bad boys legally? In Lucky Luke's world fortunately because the man who is so fast he can outdraw his own shadow would have too easy a life without the dunderheaded bandits!

Nice piece on the real life Emmett Dalton one of the original Dalton gang....who went into an occupation that is full of sharks before acting.

You know the score -lots of visual and word gags and some very lovely printed art pages. Nice, clean and ...even the smell of the new album (go on, you know you sniff them as much as I do.

Passing through New Orleans, Lucky Luke stumbles upon a heated argument between two steamboat captains. The argument soon turns into a wager: whichever boat reaches Minneapolis first after steaming up the Mississippi will win the exclusive rights to the route.

Captain Barstow quickly invites Luke to travel on his Daisy Belle, fearing that his opponent will cheat. And while he’s not wrong, the biggest danger to both boats remains Old Man River himself …

Wait...the Dalton's haven't gotten out of prison to legally mess everything up? Let me check.....yup. It IS a Lucky Luke book and look at that cover. Aww, look at that lovely alligator....okay, you don't need the Daltons for trouble.

For all the humour and gags one thing that never ceases to surprise me is how the humour comics go into meticulous detail on things like the river boats. Look at the cover. Simple river boat illustrated but do you think that is easy to draw when taking into account perspective? Very people give any thought into how much time and effort the artwork takes and I'd love the see the pages that went in the waste bin.

If you are thinking you need to buy 79 (or 78 re no. 77) books to catch up do not panic as there are complete collections with 200+ pages each but they seem to be currently out of stock so check with Cinebook if you are interested.
